i
House of Nan King and go (at off times, to avoid what can be a VERY long wait) every time i'm in SF. some call it a tourist trap, but i know locals and frequent visitors who just love it - as do i. it's not fancy, but i've always had a great experience there and friends i've taken there now recommend it to others, too.

rather than order off the menu, at HoNK it's best to ask what the chef recommends that day. the first few times i did that, i swear the waitress sort of disappeared and the chef swooped in to take care of us personally! but whoever takes your order, when they ask you what protein you're in the mood for after you hand them back the menus and start the conversation, ask what's most fresh and delicious. and then just let the chef cook for you. i've been there many times, and sent many people, and if you order this way, nobody i know has ever been disappointed.
and i wish like crazy i could remember the name of this Vietnamese place i was taken to on my last visit to SF. i remember walking from the SF Chronicle building through a pretty rough area and arriving at what looked like a hole in the wall but was super popular with the locals...being taken upstairs to this little attic-like dining room that was crowded and noisy and fantastic. and the food was A.MA.ZING! if i remembered the name of the place, i'd recommend it highly

Thanks for the suggestions!
Julius did give us some spot on tips too
Jennie, we did not make it the House of Nanking YET...but I think we will. We hit Great Eastern in Chinatown for dim sum today and it was AWESOME!
Tonight we went the the Haight and after walking around and freezing for 20 minutes, we found a couple of great bars that had $4 Laganitas pints. WIN!
TOmorrow.......Muir Woods followed by the Filmore Jazz Festival.
YAY us!

You guys got some good weather while you're here. Sunny and warm inland, cool and/or foggy by the coast.
While at the FJF, you'll be near Japan town and there's some good sushi bars around there.
For some good Mex, take a trip almost all the way down Geary (actually about 23rd Ave.) to Tommys. Family owned and operated and really great food. From there, keep going down Geary then past the Cliff house down to the Great Highway then back up toward the city through GG Park (or Lincoln Ave, your choice) where you'll meet up with Hashbury district once you reach the end of the park.
How long you guys in town for?

Hey Gordy!
We're here until Wednesday. Today's plan is possibly heading to Muir Woods this morning, then to the jazz street festival thingie on Fillmore. Maybe you can meet up with us there this afternoon?
I just can't though it would be nice, thanks. If you guys can manage a lunch near Civic Center before you leave, I can give you a tour of the Opera House (we're in season still so there's lots going on) and we can grab a gyro or falafel at one of my fav little spots in the city, Gyro King. But I know I'll see you both at Vibes, too.
