Wonder what the odds are that we all have already eaten a dog, cat or rodent from a chinese place. :coffee:

I remember a few years back a chinese place here on LI was caught with slaughtered dogs in the freezer. They said "it was for their own consumption". They lost business and was closed within 2 months.

DHJ - If you were in Japan, would you partake in this unusal dish and if so, would you pay $250?

Tokyo police are investigating whether a man who cooked his own severed genitals and served them to five paying diners committed a crime, the force said Tuesday.

Mao Sugiyama had his penis and testicles surgically removed in March and kept them frozen for two months before cooking them at a public event in May.

Diners each paid 20,000 yen ($250) for a portion.

The police probe came after the mayor of Suginami ward, the Tokyo district where the event took place, said it had involved the display of obscene objects.

"Many residents of Suginami and elsewhere have expressed a sense of discomfort and feeling of apprehension over this," Mayor Ryo Tanaka said in a statement Monday.

A Tokyo police spokeswoman acknowledged the complaint, but declined to give further details, citing "an ongoing investigation".
Sugiyama, a painter in his 20s who defines himself as "asexual", did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In an email to AFP in May, he confirmed the event had taken place and said it was organised to raise awareness about "sexual minorities, x-gender, asexual people".

In tweets on May 18, the artist said steps were taken so his act met all relevant laws, including a ban on organ sales, processing of medical waste and even food sanitation requirements.

Sugiyama said his genitals had been removed by a physician and certified free of infections.

What's fugu?

blowfish - tingly, deadly when prepared wrong. see-through cuts of fish, which contain just enough of the poison to bring a tingle to your lips and mouth, but not enough to paralyze and asphyxiate you. you hope not, anyway.

i think 5 chefs in NYC are licensed to prepare it, and a handful on the west coast as well. otherwise, it's impossible to find.

Fugu is Japanese blowfish. It contains a neurotoxin that has the ability to kill you on contact. It must be prepared only by a licensed chef. Small doses of the toxin will not harm you, and the sushi of fugu will numb you out. Usually a whole dinner is created out of one fish.

An old Cape Codder told me a 40 years ago you could buy whale meat on Cape Cod, and that balleen whales were tastier than carnivorous whales. He said he used to eat it and described it as beefy.

agree on both counts. everyone whose eaten thinly-sliced raw horse says it's light-years better than beef sashimi.

that said, i plan on preparing kobe beef sashimi this summer, served with Nobu's new-style oil, which barely warms the meat when drizzled on top. :Phishfolk:
