Obama Nazi death camp gaffe 'hurt all Poles': PM

(AFP) – 4 hours ago
WARSAW — US President Barack Obama's description of a Nazi German Holocaust site as a "Polish death camp" shocked Poland, whose leaders insist the record be set straight 67 years after World War II.

Obama on Tuesday labeled the Nazi facility used to process Jews for extermination as a "Polish death camp." The White House later said the president "misspoke" and expressed "regret".

The linguistic faux pas overshadowed Obama's posthumous award of the highest US civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to Jan Karski, a former Polish underground officer who provided early eyewitness accounts of Nazi Germany's genocide of European Jews.

Poland's Prime Minister Donald Tusk said Wednesday Obama's words had hurt all Poles and he expected more from Washington than just "regret".

"I am convinced that our American friends can today allow themselves a stronger reaction than a simple expression of regret from the White House spokesman -- a reaction more inclined to eliminate once and for all these kinds of errors," Tusk told reporters in Warsaw.

"Today, this is a problem for the reputation of the United States," the prime minister said.

Barack Obama gave the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dolores Huerta, an honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America. During the ceremony today President Obama admitted he stole her slogan “Yes we can!” for his 2008 campaign.

Heritage reported:

President Obama awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Tuesday to Dolores Huerta, an 82-year-old labor activist and co-founder of the United Farm Workers union.

Huerta is also an honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America.

DSA describes itself as “the largest socialist organization in the United States, and the principal U.S. affiliate of the Socialist International.”

Huerta has claimed, “Republicans hate Latinos,” and has spoken fondly of Hugo Chavez’s despotic regime in Venezuela.

The Medal of Freedom is awarded to individuals who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

Barack Obama admitted at the ceremony today that he stole Huerta’s slogan for his campaign.

Not sure, it doesn't seem to make it clear what particular camp he was referring to but they do say "Many were killed in death camps set up by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland -- including the most notorious, Auschwitz-Birkenau" so it's possible he meant that one.

That's my point exactly.

You can count on one hand the number of times that Obama has said something that was off.

With Bush and then Palin, most of us lost track of the stupidity because it became an almost daily occurrence.

What's the other thing he said... 57 states? Conservatives felt tingles down their spine when he said that one. They still talk about it.

There were lots of death camps, many of them were in Poland. So how precisely are you supposed to refer to a death camp in Poland?

I'd go with referring to them by who created and controlled them, especially in a case like this where you're pretty much assigning the responsibility for the death camps on those who suffered and died in those very camps.

Apparently that wasn't his only fuck up that day, he was 3 years off when he signed the guest book

Earlier in the day, he botched the signing of the guest book at Westminster Abbey by writing the date as "24 May 2008."

Yeah, it's pretty sad what people will forgive when it's their guy calling the shots.

Did you see how they're covering up the deaths of innocent civilians killed in drone attacks?

I wonder how much the civilian casualty totals would drop for the Iraq war if Bush had tried to pull this sort of bullshit (of course you can bet your ass those who think this is the "right thing" now would have been screaming the loudest if he had even hinted at it) :bang:

The White House convinces itself that the Obama-ordered air strikes overseas have not killed many civilians because, according to the president, any and all men near around a drone target are considered enemies of America and can be executed without being added to the count of civilian casualties.

"It in effect counts all military-age males in a strike zone as combatants, according to several administration officials, unless there is explicit intelligence posthumously proving them innocent," is how the Times report it. "Counterterrorism officials insist this approach is one of simple logic: people in an area of known terrorist activity, or found with a top Qaeda operative, are probably up to no good."

Is it in the water or something?

Sure is, prolly from the fucking fracking...prolly

Obama’s Support for Natural Gas Drilling "A Painful Moment" for Communities Exposed to Fracking

Last week, President Obama called the United States "the Saudi Arabia of natural gas" in a speech about boosting domestic energy production. That concerns Wyoming farmer John Fenton, who already has more than two dozen gas wells on his property. The Environmental Protection Agency ruled in December that water contamination in Pavillion, Wyoming, was a result natural gas extraction and the controversial technique known as fracking. "Things changed pretty rapidly," Fenton says, after fracking took place on his land near Pavillion, and he now has to ship in water for drinking. "It didn’t take long to notice significant impacts to the water, the change to smell like diesel fuel. Methane was bubbling in the water. We had neighbors that actually had livestock die from drinking the water. And we also saw really huge impacts to our way of life. The farm fields are full of wellheads now that we have to work around. We have people coming and going off our property 24 hours a day. And we’ve seen over a 50 percent devaluation in the value of our land." We also speak with filmmaker Josh Fox, who was arrested for attempting to record a congressional hearing over the EPA report on Pavillion. Fox is producing a sequel to his award-winning film, "Gasland," about the impact of fracking across the United States. [includes rush transcript]

The partisan blindness of the left/right paradigm is just something I can not figure out. It really is as if Americans have made politics into a two team never ending football game adn the whole thing is for kicks. We spent 8 years whinning about Bushes horrible civil liberty errosions, foreign war entanglements, massive spending, etc...and as soon as the Obrahma takes office and continues the wars, even adds to them, the civil liberty erosions, the record spending spree, etc....it's all good. Our (D) is doing it all right.

Unreal. Is it some type of strange joke? Or his hyperpartisanship really jumped the shark and now it's just football. Blue vs. red.
