Well, it wasn't the year I might have hoped for competition wise, but I think it was absolutely necessary for healing and recovery purposes.
I have begun to reinvest my efforts to maintain my swim fitness and have started to put myself through "pool bootcamp" again by continuing to address what I deem to be weaknesses. That means lots of drills and kicking. I had a taste of being at the lead of the pack in the water this summer and I liked it. So being out of the water fast and feeling strong will continue to be my strategy in preparing for the upcoming 2014 competition season. I am also sincerely looking forward to competing in more open water competitions this year and, hopefully, one with a certain Cur in August.
I have also started focusing more time on my run form and technique in an effort to ramp up my running abilities. I have the mental toughness, but I really want to reinvent myself this year as a runner that can back up a strong swim/bike combo. My training peers are going to have to work themselves to death if they ever want to catch me before the finish line this year.
Likewise, I am also participating in a hydration vs. thirst perception study at Brock University. It's HARD work, and very invasive (think rectal probes, IV's, blood, sweat and urine samples). While I'll be assisiting to further our understanding of sporting performance and inhibitors to performance, I'm also learning a lot about myself in regards to my mental toughness which I'm eager to get back after Ironman 2012.
All in all, I'm setting my sights back on competing in long course triathlon again. It was a fun year of short distance events, and fun charity opportunities with Kelly, but it's time to get back to the business at hand...Kona. I know the chances are slim to none of my ever qualifying, but that's not going to be due to my not putting my best foot forward. I'm putting all my eggs in this basket and this year is just the start of the journey. I'll update this thread later when I begin to select my A-races next summer but, for the time being, it's back to training...back to life...back to reality. Onward and forward. Here goes nothing...
