Yeah, what are you drinkin?" I ordered a Margarita with ice, but he wouldn't hear of it: "Naw, naw...what the hell kind of drink is that for Kentucky Derby time? What's wrong with you, boy?" He grinned and winked at the bartender. "Goddam, we gotta educate this boy. Get him some good whiskey..."

Did you ever get the feeling HST might have been stretching the truth just a bit?

:cheesy:

"I was sure it was the last article I was ever going to do for anybody," Thompson said in a 1974 interview with Playboy. "Then when it came out, there were massive numbers of letters, phone calls, congratulations, people calling it a 'great breakthrough in journalism.' And I thought, 'Holy shit, if I can write like this and get away with it, why should I keep trying to write like the New York Times?' It was like falling down an elevator shaft and landing in a pool full of mermaids."

If you've never read HST's Derby article, check it out.  Definitely fun read especially if you've ever been to the Derby or any major horserace.

  Thanks - I haven't read that in years.

Just watched Where The Buffalo Roam - next up is Fear & Loathing.

I remember discovering that book as a teenager.

my company hosts a big shindig at the derby every year for one of our big customers.    i'm guessing we spend a couple tens of thousands on it.

Mary was gifted a wager ticket for her birthday and won $46 on Golden Soul...we had our own decadence at the birthday party without ever looking at the race
