The Vermont Yankee nuclear plant is the same model as the Fukushima plant in Japan. Despite that fact, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission chose to relicense Vermont Yankee just 1 week after the terrible Fukushima incident. Additionally, the Associated Press has reported that the NRC and the nuclear industry have worked in tandem to weaken safety standards in order to keep aging nuclear reactors within the standard. To date, the NRC has granted 71 nuclear plant license renewals and has never rejected one. The NRC's job is safety, not to represent the nuclear industry.
