looks like this is the end of his battle with cancer.

i was looking forward to seeing him this summer at GSB '12, but it looks like that's not meant to be.

Long-time Woodstock resident and Grammy-winning musician Levon Helm is dying of cancer, according to a message posted on www.levonhelm.com.

The message reads:

"Dear Friends,

Levon is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey.

Thank you fans and music lovers who have made his life so filled with joy and celebration... he has loved nothing more than to play, to fill the room up with music, lay down the back beat, and make the people dance! He did it every time he took the stage...

We appreciate all the love and support and concern.

From his daughter Amy, and wife Sandy "

Got a chance to speak to him briefly at the Pavilion a couple of years ago and he was pretty frail back then. A few local celebs including Peter Wolf stopped by to see him that night.

Saddest news in a long time. Levon was part of the most influential band in rock history (IMHO) and his positive outlook was evident every time he took the stage. I made 2 rambles and he was so friendly with everyone who came. He seemed like the kind of guy who truely appreciated the opportunity to make us sing and dance.

Such sad news - he brought us some great music - I feel blessed to have caught him at MJ for his 70th birthday bash two years ago - he will be missed but his music assures that he will always be with us!

I am thankful, though, that I saw him at The Chance in Pougkeepsie in the mid 90's. It was pretty intimate there and Levon came outside after the show. I remember he was so real and so down to earth. He really conveyed appreciation towards the fans. I'm glad I have that memory. And it teaches me the valuable lesson that tomorrow isn't promised and procratination doesn't pay off. I was totally planning to catch a Ramble this summer.

Levon Helm - drummer and lead singer for The Band - presides over what he calls midnight ramble concerts in his Woodstock, N.Y., barn, where he surrounded by musical friends and family, including his daughter, singer Amy Helm. His voice may be raspy, but his energetic drumming and high-beam smile can warm the coldest winter night.

I was just in the car singing along with Rock of Ages to annoy and or entertain the family and the last line I sang was Can't raise a Cain back up when he's in defeat. and then I shut off the engine. This isn't the only crazy coincidence to happen to me today, but it is by far the saddest. The first time I heard The Mountain by Levon I actually cried because it reminds me so much of the place I live.

Never knew he was still suffering from cancer. Saw him at vibes last year and he was incredible. His last gig was in mid-March. Gotta give the guy credit for fighting it out till the end and still performing. Love ya Levon, prayers and hugs to the family.
