Mets Turn the Collapse Into an Art Form

It’s too bad baseball does not hand out gold medals for second-half collapses. The Mets would have received one for their September fiasco in 2007 and another for their repeat performance in 2008. They may have received a third for their 2-9 stumble right after the All-Star Game in 2010, a skid that took them right out of contention. And they certainly would have gotten a fourth for their current 1-11 escapade, which has turned a feel-good 2012 campaign into the usual, miserable mess.
When the Mets were 46-40 at the All-Star break, a post on the Bats blog asked readers if the Mets’ front office should step it up before the July 31 trading deadline and try to add another starting pitcher, or a right-handed bat, or a reliever or two, or three, in an aggressive bid to stay in postseason contention into September. The consensus of those who commented was that Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson should be careful, that the Mets’ first half had been fun to watch but that their won-lost record might be deceiving.
That consensus appears to have been dead-on. Although it is easy to exaggerate a team’s flaws during an awful losing streak, it seems clear that the 2012 Mets are closer to being half a team than a full one, with an infield but no outfield, with starting pitching but no bullpen, with a catcher who looks capable in some instances and not up to the job in others. With Matt Harvey having arrived on the scene, and with Zack Wheeler not far behind, the Mets could improve in 2013. But without a single player on the roster who projects as a solid everyday outfielder next season, they might not.
For now, at least, Mets fans can be thankful that the 2012 unraveling occurred just as the Summer Games are about to start in London. Tired of watching Jason Bay fail to get a hit, or the bullpen fail to get an out, they can turn their attention to track and field and swimming, to gymnastics and soccer, to archery and wrestling.
And to the sport that they surely know best — the high dive.

Dan, this is why I had a hard time "believing" back in May and June.
Realistically this team is flawed. The bulpen is the worst in the league. And has been since 2007 (in general).
We have one real bat in the lineup.
Hopefully the future starts tonight with Harvey. I hope for the best but this is the Mets we are talking about.
Let's talk off season. (Would love hamilton but we cant afford him).
We need an outfielder. I like Murphy but he is the most tradable asset and am ok with letting him go.
Which means we need a 2b, but there is not much there.
We need relievers, like 5.
Pelfrey will be back because he will be cheap and he knows us. I do not see any real money being spent on starting pitching and the youngster to hope pan out.
Ike has into next year to prove he is more than doug mienkevicz, justin smoak types. But you know I love Miggy's bat.
I am ok with Tejeda.
Anyway, I see around a 500 finish for this team. 80-84 prolly.

This season reminds me of two years ago. When Beltran came back from DL after all star break. Except this year it is Bay coming back from DL.

For Buffalo, not los Mets.Word is Wheeler is being called up to pitch Sunday.
It looks like the Phillies are having a fire sale. Victorino to the Dodgers; Pence maybe going to the Giants; Cliff Lee rumored to be trade bait.
Meanwhile, at 126th & Roosevelt ...
