Just because your team plays poorly, doesn't mean you stop rooting for 'em. Ask Vic what it was like to root for the Phillies from '87 through 2000 (excluding 1993). Nothing better than a 3rd place finish in all almost 15 years (and a loss in the World Series in 1993). You think he stopped rooting for his team?

I never said I would stop rooting for the Mets. I have rooted for them since I can remember.

I just have realistic expectations for this coming season. Barely winning over 70 games. I see 74-88.

Other than their really young pitching, Duda, and Ike what other young players do we have that could improve enough to make a difference next year?

Tejeda? I think he is a bench player at best, also think he is going to be exposed this year playing everyday.

Thole? I thought last year was his year to prove he could do it every day. Dont think he did enough. .268 3 40

Murphy has been around long enough to know what he is. Great bat, below average fielder.

Parnell - same. I think he will always be a Kyle Farnsworth at best. Great fast ball, no movement, and not much else.

I've heard some rumblings about people wanting a DH in the National League. Seems it's the only place left where pitchers hit.

How about Turner?

I was pretty impressed by him last year. Looking forward to seeing more of him. Of course if he shows any promise, the poor guy's probably trade bait. :picardfp:

I wouldnt consider Murphy's batting great. Good sure. Very good, maybe he will become one. Not great. Good to very good bat and below average fielder. He's got little power and his obp isnt impressive. No where near great.

And it might be too early to give up on Thole, some players take a little longer and its not like he had any help in that lineup last year.

I agree, I just think a .313 hitter is above average, great may be not. Prolly only because of his lack of power.

He is a bench player. Infield (Ike, Murph, Tejeda, Wright). Don't see any room for Turner. Although, Turner prolly can play second better than Murph, but he cant hit as well.

I'm not sure how I feel about it either, but isn't it all but gone from college baseball?

It's kinda unfair to a pitcher, someone who hasn't seriously swung a bat since sometime in high school, to ask them to do that again...don't you think?

(complete devil's advocate on this. I don't like the DH at all)

Manning replaced a pretty good MLB player after a knee injury at TN.

Entering his junior season in 1994, he was the back-up to Jerry Colquitt and ahead of Peyton Manning. After Colquitt tore knee ligaments in the season opener at UCLA, Helton took over as the starter. Three weeks later against Mississippi State, he suffered a knee injury himself and was replaced by Manning. Manning went on to break several records and eventually be drafted first overall by the Indianapolis Colts.

Adam Rubin just tweeted. Plenty of opening day tickets available.

He added you can buy as many as 8 in a row for some sections. (Just checked this... TRUE! 8 field level tickets at 300 a pop, total with tax ... $2,586.00.)

Price range:
$55 upper deck.
$300 for first few rows fields level.
$90 - 200 for everywhere else.

I am thinking about going. It is Thursday before Good Friday (Holiday). Did someone say 4 day weekend with a day game to start it off right. hmmm...

 $55 to act as a landing marker for arrivals @ LGA just because it's opening day, to see a team marked to lose 90 games this season? two better ideas:

1) use stubhub, morning of game, and sit somewhere nice for $20 when the tickets aren't moving and the price drops.

2) go to game 2, Saturday, and pay $27 to sit in those $55 seats.

i think i'm getting the boys tickets for their birthdays (april 26/27), to a fun game, maybe one of the Diamondbacks matchups first weekend in May. alternately, Ilya's birthday is on the 26th, and they've got a getaway day game...1pm start...maybe snag both boys and take 'em to the game then. uh oh, this sounds like a great plan.

Eric Langill suspected of DUI

Updated: March 12, 2012, 3:07 PM ET
By Adam Rubin | ESPNNewYork.com

[I]
LAKELAND, Fla. -- New York Mets bullpen catcher Eric Langill was arrested by the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office and charged with driving under the influence with property damage, a misdemeanor, according to a county arrest affidavit issued Monday.

General manager Sandy Alderson said Langill spent the night in jail but has since posted bond and been released.

According to the affidavit from the arresting officer, Langill's white Honda Accord crashed into a concrete fountain in the center of a traffic circle and flipped over at approximately 11:25 p.m. ET Sunday. Langill tried to leave the scene on foot but was "kept there" until law enforcement arrived, the report stated.

Langill told the officer he was leaving a local bowling alley and sports bar immediately before the incident; the Mets held a team bowling event that night. Alderson attended the event and insisted the team-sponsored bowling portion of the evening ended nearly 2

The 2000s Knicks are like the 90s Mets. Lots of overpaid, selfish players. Paralyzed by bad contracts. Bad coaching decisions.

Mets are paralyzed because their owners are a bunch of crooks. Not because they signed a bunch of bad free agents.

True but the Mets always doll out bad contracts. I see more of the same in the future until Wilpons are gone.

Bad contracts Last year - Ollie, Castillo, Johan, Bay, Wright
Bad Contracts This year - Johan, Bay, Wright (last two years do not equate to $16 mill, prior to that yes Wright was worth it.)
Bad Contracts Next Year - Johan, Bay, Wright, Having the same owners.
Bad Contracts Two years - Johan, Bay, (David Wright traded during season)

My analogy of owners is that they are both terrible owners.

My analogy of the Mets and 2000's Knicks, is a little off, but the overall point is both team will be irrelevant for a LONG TIME.

hey, everyone has a bad contract when you trying to run a baseball team with a piggy bank.

you need some big time players, and Wright and Santana are that. You have to pay them. Injuries have made the contracts look worse, but you can't pay everyone like a day laborer.

I am just so down about everything about this team. Players, management, and especially the owners.

I here stuff like Wilpon is a Baseball guy. He knows baseball. He is not one of these super Rich owners that just wants a team for the sake of having a team. That he is a baseball man and knows so much about baseball you would be surprised.

So this rich "baseball guy" has had the team for how long on his own and never won a world series? And made 3 playoff appearances since 1990?

AWFUL.

Don't get me wrong, once games start I will be into it and rooting, but I do not see much more than 70 wins, which is far from contention.

Ollie finally got his payday and then got fat and lazy in the off season. However, prior to that signing, people in NY praised Ollie for his work in the post season. You remember that post season? The one where we barely had a starter left by the time we got to it?? Ollie pitched well enough in it to be offered a several year contract. We were also in a bind though for a starter at the time and no one in the farm system yet to ready enough to start. And with Boras as his agent, Minaya got hosed. We all saw it when he signed for $36 mil, wasn't a lot to be done about it though.

Were you happy when Wright signed his last contract? I was. Felt he got a good deal then too. Be it from the dimensions of Citifield of him playing hurt, Wright hasn't play up to potential the last two years, prior to that you loved 'em. We all did. His contract wasn't bad. The player got injured several years into said contract.

Same can be said for Santana. Was his contract a little bit over inflated?? Perhaps, but I'm betting you were real happy that day when you heard he was gonna be wearing the blue and orange. And again, the man got injured. There was no way to fortell that was going to happen.

You blame the Wilpons for all our issues, when in fact it was Omar Minaya and his overvaluing of players that has now put us in the position we're in now. Even if the Wilpons had never heard of Bernie Madoff, we'd still probably have the same team on the field right now. Other than Jose (which I still think is due to a Sandy Alderson's long standing tradition of not offering players a 2nd long term contract due to the injuries seen in older players more than money to spend on salary) since the Madoff scandal broke, has there been players available that you think this team should have signed but didn't? And before you say yes, is it because the Mets payroll was already too high due to poor signings by Minaya or was it because The Mets just didn't have money to spend on a player? Think long and hard about what The Mets payroll numbers were the last few years before ya answer that one.
