just bought a used small coop off craigslist. it will hold three chickens, sounds like a good placed to start. of course i'm thinking what the hell did i get my self into

dude you bought a coop?..why didn't you just build one? a few 2x4s, plywood and chicken wire would do.

You can fit a lot more than 3 chickens in a 6x6, especially if it's really tall with roosts.

true, but I like give them room.

The coope below is a coop within a coop...it's an overkill for only six hens.

guineas are mean, and LOUD. Only loud when you're trying to sleep though. :funny1:

That's why we ruled them out. I sleep during the day.

They really aren't much work.

My neighbor has 3 chickens and 2 ducks. They each lay 1-2 eggs in the warm weather. We take care of them when she's out of town or busy and get lots of yummy fresh eggs :jamguy:

They all sleep in a closed coop. Chickens on the top, ducks on the bottom. They tuck themselves in at dusk and the door just needs to be latched. She changes the shavings in the coop once per week. Put down fresh water and feed in the morning.

She only has hens so they aren't noisy. I don't think they are really that smelly either.

I'd love to have some but we only have a 200 x 200 property and one of my dogs can't be trusted around them. She pulled a bunch of tail feathers out of Ginger once :bang:

Sadly, one or two probably wont make it..especially since they are being shipped.
I picked up 7 chicks from the local Agway..one died the next day. There is always a chick or two that aren't dominant and they have to fight for food and water.

Went to visit a friend of mine up near Oswego a few months ago and he was just starting with about 6 or so. Said it was really easy, just have to clean up after them and protect them from foxes.

Ever think of trying to raise rabbits?

When I went to Italy, the friend (guy who ran the Deli I worked at in high school) I satyed with had a rabbit farm.

They were seperated in bunches.

Babies, mating, and fukk grown and ready to eat.

I must admit, they were quite tasty. But I did not put it together until after I was eating it.

Thought of it, but I'm not a big meat eater...thinking about maybe getting a couple of dairy goats or sheep next year. We'll see...

Sheep are really hard to milk and don't produce nearly as much milk as a goat would.

You're think sweater puppies, arentcha?

loving this thread!!! we are pining for a few chickens and a goat of our own, especially since our local source for fresh eggs lost her chickens to coyotes. we found another source but they're not quite as good.

b'gock! :happyhappy:
