4 shows a night sounds right plan on sleeping from 7am till 11am then going to fest grounds and starting all over again.
This!!!
Don't over think it, follow the music you like at night and you'll have a great time. Also, remember its a marathon not a sprint. It's very easy to get so amped the first night that its like getting shot out of a cannon, then you can wreck yourself for the rest of the weekend. Even after 10 years of going, odds are worse than 50/50 that I will make that same mistake again this year. Not sure I'll ever learn...
There's no taking it easy at Jazzfest, but a little pace here and there can work wonders.

Yeah, I don't have the intestinal fortitude to go to the festival, then to 4 after-shows, get 4 hours sleep between 7am-11am, and then repeat. I'm more of a go to the festival all day, have an eveving activity, and then sleep from 2am-10am guy.
But I still suspect I'll enjoy myself even if I'm not raging it like a ginger spunion.

If you see Ivan Neville and need a limo ask him.......He will set you up for the night with a Lincon town car limo with a bar for $100 to the driver.
Ivan is the shit!!!

and i'd surely tell you to be sensible, know your limits and not try to do everything (sounds like something i'd say, right?)...but some of the best times of my life have been when i dragged my sorry, exhausted ass from one club to the next until dawn and slept through dayfest altogether.
and the Ivan Neville thing? i know you are dubious now, but don't ever discount the magic of Jazzfest. it (or something totally like it) can and probably will happen to you. Ivan Neville could make your night, your favorite musician could crash on your couch, you could share a cable car with the rockstar you just lost your mind to 10 minutes earlier, and end up at Snake & Jake's with him 'til the wee hours...
i'm so, so jealous of you both and wish i could be there to watch your doors get blown off down there for the first time of ever. happy anniversary, you crazy kids! enjoy every moment.

Flying down on Sunday and staying the week, my first Jazzfest and trip to New Orleans. Going to check out the city Mon-Weds and do the actual fest next Thurs-Sat and come home on Sunday. Can't fricken wait!!!
Some of the best music I saw was Mon-Wed. on Frenchman St. There's also a free concert in the park on Wed and a bunch of free in-store performances at the record shops during the week.

You're very welcome!
I've been known to walk from Gentilly stage all the way there just for the ac flushies.
Don't forget to bring $1 for the attendant - Those ladies to a fabulous job!
Bonus: Pick up a good beer just outside the track on your way back to wherever.

Where are you staying> If you're south of the quarter, you might consider renting a bike to get back and forth from the festival grounds. We get ours here: http://bicyclemichaels.com/ . While everyone else is sitting in traffic we're able to zip on home to get the nighttime phase started. If you plan on drinking a lot at the festival, maybe this is not ideal, but I only usually have a couple beers to wash down my oysters. All the better to be able to go late into the night.
Marcia Ball is playing a free show in Lafayette Square May 2nd.
John Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentleman Saturday at the Maple Leaf is my vote for the nighttime show of the weekend, though KDTU & Anders Osborn covering Sticky Fingers at the House of Blues should be great if not oversold.
Eatingwise -
Fiorella's in the French Market for the best fried chicken.
Dante's Kitchen or Brigtsen's for a "nice" dinner. Two of the best restaurants in the city and they're right across the street from one
another.
Adolfo's on Frenchmen is my favorite hidden gem of a restaurant. There's no sign, but it's right above a divey bar called the Apple Barrel. Amazing Creole/Italian Food and always a ton of fresh fish on hand.

Word is that there'll be a Radiator's reunion at Howlin' Wolf on Tues 5/1. http://www.nojazzfes...ead.php?t=19446
Dr. John is listed as special guest during the Warren Haynes Band set in the Blues Tent on Sat afternoon at the fest.
Check out the free Marcia Ball show Wed afternoon at Layfayette Sq. That's not too far where you're staying.

and i agree with whoever said to make Karl D latenight a priority...there was 1 year i was disappointed but every other time (5, i think?) it was one of the highlights of my week, no matter what else i saw or did. YES it's HoB and YES it's crowded and hot, but it's also Karl Denson at his very (shirtless, sweating, playing his heart out) best with the promise of lots and lots of musical guests.
foods to try at the fairgrounds: crawfish monica, sweet potato pone, strawberry lemonade, stuffed puff, crawfish etouffe, and everything else that sounds good to you.

The Best place for breakfast. A MUST-GO. There will be a line, but it moves quick. The line extends out the door but it is just to order, then you find a seat and they bring you the food. Going earlier might help beat the line.

A MUST-GO, unless you don't eat beef and pork.
Seems like everything there has either beef or pork in it.
They even put unsolicited beef on a turkey po-boy.
