Reminds me of a guy who plays underwater ice hockey in Minnesota.
Scuba gear, short hand-held hocky stick and a tennis ball up under the ice. :afro:

A few years back, I was a public safety diver with a Fire Department's underwater search and rescue team. Every now and then, we'd have the opportunity to do ice diving. Was totally cool to do that kind of thing.

But we were very anal retentive about safety. NOBODY went under the ice without being tethered, and there was a backup diver ready to help resolve a problem, and another diver at the 70% ready state in case the backup diver had an issue. Gotta be able to find your way back out of the hole.

The Diver/tender had a series of signals through tugs of the line. If the diver became unattached from the line, there was a procedure for that too. Divers would carry ice picks, and snorkel tubes, in case they had to spend some time under the ice without compressed air.

It was a big ordeal for the topmen too... Lots of equipment had to be sledded to the ice hole, including dive gear, chainsaws, poles, ropes, Ice spikes, etc. All of them in Cold weather suits in case the ice gave way.

We'd come back from an ice dive drill exhausted, but it was always very cool.
