Van Halen, with David Lee Roth back in the fold, announces 2012 world tour
Eddie Van Halen and Roth working on first new album together since '1984'
Rock ’n’ roll may never die, but even the ugliest heavy-metal feuds apparently do.
Van Halen announced Monday on its website that the band is going on tour next year with original lead singer David Lee Roth, who left the band during its heyday in 1985, back behind the mic.
Roth, perhaps realzing his mistake after a stalled solo career, tried several attempts to return to the fold over the years.
After guitarist Eddie Van Halen booted Roth from the band in October 1996, however, Roth released a blistering letter to the media calling his one-time collaborator a liar.
“We parted company with David Lee Roth 11 years ago for many reasons. In his open letter ... we were reminded of some of them,” Eddie Van Halen said in a statement shortly afterward.
The band will not be touring with its entire classic lineup, however. Original bassist Mike Anthony is enjoying success with another ex-Van Halen singer, Sammy Hagar, in the supergroup Chickenfoot. Eddie’s son Wolfgang took over Anthony’s spot during an ill-fated 2007 tour - that was shortened when Eddie Van Halen went into rehab for alcohol abuse.
Lee Roth had rejoined the band for that tour, but remained in limbo as Van Halen's future was unclear. Then earlier this year, Rolling Stone Magazine reported that the band was hard at work at recording a new studio album.
Eddie’s brother, Alex, is the only other original member to have stayed with the band since its inception in the ’70s.
The first tickets for the Van Halen 2012 tour go on sale Jan. 10.
Van Halen sold 35 million albums with Roth at the mic and 20 million albums without him, according to Scripps News.
