There's another recent thread about Roku, if you're interested.

I was going to get suckered back into cable (it's $10 more a month then I pay now for a year...but I can get a 'promo' on my internet and save $30 for the next six...)

So I'm gonna take my savings from my cable and buy one!

The entry-level model (which enables you to watch everything the most expensive model does) lists for $50. Don't buy the three more expensive Roku 2s unless you need (or just want) their features.

we went with the more expensive model for the ability to play local files. but i agree with uc. if you are using this only to stream only content spend $50.

No. It just makes streaming to your TV seamless. You can cancel your cable TV subscription, but will still need some sort of high-speed internet access.

I almost can't respond since you said 'amazeballs', but I'll overlook it for the Roku. Yes, this thing kicks some major ass. I just got one, and LOVE it. I haven't had cable in 3 years... you can imagine my excitement. :Phishfolk:

Also the most expensive model is the only one with an ethernet port, if you are concerned about wifi in the house.

Never heard of this before, don't want cable, will have to check this thing out.

Can you get live sports on it? That's the only reason Ty wants cable, and I'd prefer to avoid it altogether so if he could still see the games he wants to see, then this may be the answer...

Does this simply mean, unless you do have WIFI, you must buy the Most exp? Just wanna be sure the one I get (el cheapest) is ok (wireless=yes)

We get all of our networks (abc, etc) through an antenna. You can also buy the MLB, NHL, etc packages and play all games through the Roku. The one thing of value that you will be giving up is ESPN. But, you have to ask yourself, is ESPN worth $50 per month.

Roku on it's own gets NHL and NBA if you subscribe with the league websites individually in order to get the games, not sure of price.

I don't have Roku and don't know if it has other options, but Roku does work with another pay service that I do use PlayOn, which has ML Baseball and NFL again with subscription to the league's own service, again not sure of those prices.

But with PlayOn I bought a one time license for the premium service for about $100, they have a monthly and yearly subscription model too. BTW they are all half price I noticed, lifetime is only $50, year $20 and month $5.
http://www.playon.tv/index.php

It also has mobile phone apps for android and iphone which gave me netflix, amazon video, hulu and local file streaming months before they had android apps.

Now if you add up all those costs they are most likely below cable anyway. PlayOn would need a computer on your home network to have it installed and running in order to view it on the Roku box. PlayOn has many scripts that you can add in addition to it's advertised Channel content giving you hundreds of channel options for free or little one time script cost.http://www.playon.tv/channel-store/, and a couple of unofficial script sites too.

Roku has NHL, UFC, ML Soccer, NBA, Racefans TV, Sail TV, SurfNetwork, Willow (pro Cricket), and several others.
For NFL games, get an antenna. OTA HD is better quality than cable HD, anyway.

WiFi comes with all the models, including the $50 model. If you want a wired connection, you need the $100 model.

There's been more activity lately, especially from the Ron Paulbots and their anti-communist propaganda. The place needs your presence.
