Exposure. record companies love "cookie cutter" artists. They can mold them, sell them via product placement, and target the younger audience with their 3:20 minute pop hooks because it works.

Couple this with the attention span of the average individual in todays society and you get a population full of Rhianna zombies.

In an effort to point to at least one discrepancy, it's also important to add the advance in technologies and how "singles" are charted, along with new albums. These things all play a role in the popular discourse of "muzak" today.

I bet Hey Jude would have sold a whole helluva lot more then 8 million albums if today's technology and marketing plans were utilized back then.

FWIW there are now almost a hundred million more people in this country than in 1970 which would certainly affect some of the statistics quoted...

however after finishing the entire list

Barbara doesn't belong on that list. I would not classify her in the 'popular music'.

Yikes! I have certainly heard of everyone mentioned. And I absolutely would say Streisand is popular music (look at the numbers!). Ke$ha's TikTok (great song) sales were helped by the Internet - if iTunes existed in the 60s the Beatles would have sold more, too. And Flo Rida's song Low is actually pretty catchy but holy cow. Frightening. I gotta agree about #12 though. Beiber should not be as popular as he is. its just insulting to the human race.

Fun list Wonka!

the fact that more people spent money on Billy Ray Cyrus' one album than any one album by Bob Marley is effing criminal. :plain:
