When my sister got married to a man from Kenya, as is the custom there, my parents received livestock in exchange for the bride.
Actually, they received a check which they bought the livestock with.
They decided to get Scottish Highland cattle because of their versatility.
These cattle are good gentle working animals (pulling stuff, working in fields etc), good milkers and good for eating.
They never did train them to work, but the milk and meat were delicious - cheese too!
The dollar amount sent was good for one pregnant mama and her year old baby.
So apparently my sister was only worth 2.5 cows.
