It reads as if he came out with his feet and took out the attempting scorer. Commentators on BBC say he could have gotten the job done going hands first. Then the replacement makes a save on the resulting penalty.

He was also out to sea on the goal Greece scored to go level 1-1. oh these Arsenal goalkeepers.

wow, that was some game - i was following on gamecast from my phone while driving for the last half-hour.

i really expected the Poles to win by 2 or 3. disappointed to say the least that they only took one point from this, as i'm sure most of the nation is, as well. going to be very hard to win the group now without a big win over Russia or the Czechs, which isn't all that likely.

Great first half out of Italy against Spain.. seems like the refs are gunnin for Balotelli.. Spain seems super frustrated... DeRossi is garbage... cassano is pretty f'n good. halftime food.. then more beer and second half

that was genius tactics by the Italians. only undone by the best pass of the tournament thus far... frickin Silva. WOW.

DeRossi was immense, playing out of position in the back. He is a midfield player, and in the right system he's in front of Pirlo plowing into the box. with all the injuries and the need to throw whacky tactics at the Spanish he was great.

Balotelli does himslef no favors, and his chance alone on goal was blown.. great play by Ramos to come back and get him. Once he has the yellow he is a liability and in that 3-5-2 Di Natalte is perfect, he plays something very similar at Udinese. and he scores with his first touch.. another amazing pass by Pirlo there.. prolly the only real creation in the match.

The spanish made a mistake going with the false nine, and Torres blew a few looks. I think Llorente will get some time over the next couple games.

this guy says it better than me: http://www.zonalmark...ly-use-a-3-5-2/

they Irish forgot to play defense.. if you allow them to come onto you, you have to play defense. 3 chances, 3 goals. poor wing play, and a step slow in the back. oh well. I think Italy and Spain beat Croatia and Ireland, handily.

posting as it is currently 30 minutes into France/England match.. i was starting to get bored with it... then the goal by Lescott off of Gerard's free kick.. i don't think lescott knew it was coming.. it more ricocheted off of his head rather than a textbook header

I like soccernet's new feature. You can view the replay of a particular play. For today's game I saw the highlight of Lescott's goal.

Another reason not to attend. May be the english did not attend this tournament for this underlying reason, besides the lack of expectations.

100 hooligans. tens of thousands at the games. sadly, it happens. good on the Spanish contingent for pointing out the 200 or so within their group making the monkey chants at Balotelli on Sunday. class act on their part.

this has been and still is SOME game. the Czechs took it to the Greeks, though Cech almost handed it back...he's such an adventure out there.

but the Russia-Poland match has been fascinating. Mick McCarthy on BBC: "This is now don't lost it time, sit in and don't make a mistake. Has either team got a hero? I don't know but neither team wants a villain." 1-1 with ten or so to play.

and there's no hero, no villian tonight. 1-1 draw. that puts the Russians at 4 points, the Czechs at 3 pts, the Poles at 2 pts and the Greeks at 1 pt with one match remaining in Group A. anybody can win it. no one's safe.

I did not see last nights match. But reading the write up on the game sounds like once the US got up, they kept attacking. Also, they noted that Guatemala actually played well, were organized and counter attacked and had the overall play in their favor. Then they noted we just had better players.

Seems like if they hunkered down and played some defense we may have stolen all 3 points.

I am ok with this result.

yeah a point is good there.. but the late free kick is a tough way to go .. he got it up and down fast, and it was well taken.

it was such awful soccer end to end really, all counter from both sides, and the US gave us too much room between the back four and the holding.. who I guess was Edu. Jones looks to be too far forward for me. i don't know the amount of fouls, but I thought the ref was going to run out of whistle. he made soft cards, and didn't card on fouls he should have. Also Altidore was awful when he came on. Bradley put one on a plate for him, but he stopped his run too late. he should have continued it and he would have had a tap in.

instead, England goes on to simply win the group, with a little help from terrible officiating and a little help from Sweden.

lucky for them, as they now earn Italy instead of Spain.

i see the Portugese, Germans, Spainiards, and...dare i say...English???...moving on to the semifinals.
