Souper Groove Music & Camping Festival Returns to Freehold, NJ on September 27-28
Priedaine Latvian Society, Freehold, NJ, September 27-28 — Calling to mind Woodstock, Bonnaroo and Gathering of the Vibes, what is now the serene scene of a Latvian Cultural Center will once again become a rocking concert venue with jamming blues riffs, swirling projection light show and hula hoop parade. Souper Groove 2, to be held on September 27-28, is a unique event for the Monmouth/Ocean County area. It’s a music and camping festival that will feature over 40 of the top blues, jam, rock, bluegrass, funk, reggae, EDM and acoustic acts that New Jersey has to offer.
Souper Groove 1 was held last year, and was instantly a runaway hit. Nearly 1,000 people showed up for the inaugural event. “They sold out of car camping on Friday by noon, and that was in the rain!” Main Stage sound engineer Chris Bargy said, “Turtle Soup was finishing their set on Saturday night and there was still a line of cars from the campground to the street. A lot of people were trying to get in because they heard how good Friday night was.”
Reviews and word-of-mouth buzz from the first festival have people wondering if Souper Groove 2 will sell out this year. “We’ve surpassed every goal we’ve set for ourselves this year so far,” says Booking Coordinator David Caverly. “Vending is sold out, tickets and RV parking passes are selling online, and most of the outlets are almost sold out of their tickets. I would suggest that if you’d like to go to the festival, then get your tickets as soon as you can.”
Offering an experience unlike anything in this area, Souper Groove 2 includes music, camping and activities all in one location. The venue is the gorgeous Priedaine Latvian Cultural Center on Route 33 in Freehold, NJ. “It’s a jewel of a place, the grounds and facilities are wonderfully maintained,” said Jeff Mahajan, a producer of the event and guitarist of the headlining band, Turtle Soup. “Plus, they were very supportive about the idea to have a music festival there.”
The main attraction is the music, and featured performances include 2 sets by headlining band Turtle Soup plus Matt O’ Ree, winner of Guitar Center’s national “King of the Blues” competition, and Quincy Mumford, who played the main stage at Gathering of the Vibes. ‘Jam band’ legend Mark Diomede will lead both his Grateful Dead cover band Alligator, and his Asbury Music Hall of Fame band, the Juggling Suns.
Turtle Soup, the band hosting the festival, is on a hot streak lately. They have been playing shows with jamband luminaries moe., Jerry Garcia Band, Papadosio, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Citizen’s Band Radio, Gov’t Mule, Bernie Worrell, Steve Kimock, and have received numerous accolades from musicians and critics alike throughout the years. For the band, ambitions and expectations are high. “We’ve toured around the Northeast for years, playing festivals that have grown right before our eyes. We’ve seen first hand how some festivals have changed the scene and their community for the better, and we’re glad that Souper Groove is doing that to our scene in Jersey and beyond.”
Turtle Soup is also promoting their CD to coincide with the festival. The album “Seconds” was recorded at Brooksound Productions Studio in Tinton Falls, NJ, making it the first fully solar-powered album on the east coast. Their first CD ended up on a Warner Brothers compilation, a Microsoft ad, a movie trailer, and an e-book. It’s their second CD, and second festival.
There also are several activities planned for the festival, such as glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, pie-a-clown, sunrise and moonrise yoga, hula hoop parade, face painting, a children’s tent, and installations from local NJ artists. “We’re very excited to have the artist community involved in making this a multi-faceted event,” said Activities Director, Priscilla Baker. “We also have themes for each day (Friday theme is Animals, and Saturday’s theme is Out To Sea) so we’re encouraging everyone to dress accordingly!”
Food and craft vendors will be on site at the festival for patrons to shop and eat, and several local businesses have also lent a hand with sponsorship, advertising, and donations.
Tickets for Souper Groove Music & Camping Festival are $45 advance, $60 day of show for a full-weekend pass (includes camping, parking, music and activities), and are available via their website www.soupergroove.com. Day passes are also available. Children under 12 are admitted free.
