could anyone let me know of a good program (free or otherwise) to convert flac to mp3?

Try "Traders Little Helper" http://tlh.easytree.org/ That should work. It works the other way around anyway.

Super easy. Pick a Flac folder, pick an output folder (and mp3 quality options if you want to change the defaults), and click convert. Done
