One of my highlights at Jazz Fest this year was discovering a band called Yojimbo. I was at The Howlin Wolf late night for the Meglomaniac's Ball and the Midnight Destroyers, basically Stanton Moore with a bunch of horns were on the stage. They were playing some typical NOLA song, like Shake Your Ass, or something like that. So Skerik grabs the mic and starts calling out people in the audience for not dancing, telling everyone, "We're gonna put you on YouTube!" After calling out a few people, he calls out this one girl for dancing too hard and tells her she's gotta come up stage. This eventually turns out into the girl crowd surfing, all at the instructions from Skerik. She comes back to the stage, and Skerik asks if she plays anything, and she picks up a trombone and rips it up.
Here's the youtube link of that...
After the show, I go to the Wolf's Den for more late night music and see this girl playing her trombone, leading her band, going crazy and it was awesome. It's not just some girl, it's Carly (Charles) Meyers from the Mike Dillon Band, who along with Adam, and a percussionist form Yojimbo.
Anyway, Yojimbo and the Mike Dillon Band are playing in NYC this week and I promised myself if they ever made it up to NYC, i'd check them out. Theyre playing Thursday at Zirzamin on Houston. Theyre on at 9, Mike Dillon Band at 10. Anybody interested?
