Ok, so I have been trying to avoid GMO's in my daily diet, and finding organic/gmo free beer is a tough one.

I have found some such as Sam Smiths, Wolavers, Orlio, but with festival season on its way, finding them in cans is even harder.

Anyone know of any?

I have even begun contacting breweries in other countries to see if their beers are gmo free.

Not all beer has corn.  It depends on the beer.  Most bottom shelf has corn and/or rice.  Most microbrewed or specialty beers get their sugars from barley malt.

I just did a beer tasting. It was a new local CT brewery.

I asked them if their beer was GMO free and they had no idea what I was talking about. I was also personally speaking with the brewmaster.

When I tried to explain it to him, he was like "oh you mean organic. Nope our ingredients have pesticides on them from the farms."

Way to sell your product.

Where are you finding your info? Online search? Bug the piss out of the brewery?

Do tell... I'm acquiring more and more local faves all the time, and I'd like to look into them if I can....

Currently there is no real online database. There are a few breweries out there that are labeled organic so that's a start. Really I have been just writing every brewery personally. Some just ignore my emails, others do get back to me and out of those a few do assure me that they are GMO free.

The tricky part though is finding GMO free/organic beers that come in cans. There are a dozen + breweries that are organic but they don't serve their product in cans.

for what it's worth, unless corn or sugar is being used in the malt all beer is likely gmo free. Field trials have been conducted on GM barley but it has not reached commercial viability, not expected to either. Since it is now legal for farmers to sell GM crops that have not yet been approved for safe human consumption, you can assume there is a possibility that GM ingredients may end up in your beer, however it is very unlikely.

in other words, if you stick to microbreweries you shouldn't have to worry about GM produce making its way into your beer.

I take that back, there's actually more concern with yeast than any of the plant-based ingredients, though again this most likely doesn't extend to microbreweries.

Packie

Derogatory term for Pakistani, also used widely toward anyone of Indian/Asian decent especially Muslim. Commonly British and New England usage.

"Am just off down to the Packie shop for a case of beer."

I know the term packie as being short for "package store" as booze is not usually available in grocery stores or convenience stores in my area
Never even heard of that connotation :dunno:

The jury is still on on whether it refers to package or Pakistani.

I used to think it was derogatory until I realized that the term has been around longer than the stereotype of Indian store owners.

There's a whole alcoholic culture around the term "Package." Yes, he said "package."

When taxis advertise "Package Delivery," it doesn't mean "Courier Service." It's specific to alcohol, mainly for drinkers who can't make it out of the house but still literally "need" the alcohol.

I wonder if people realize that a lot of brewing yeast strains are GMO.
