Musically it is, but the lyrics suck.

Of course I do. That song was part of a musical revue I was in when I was in 10th grade. That was a very happy time in my life. I will forgive Bobby for not even coming close to the actual melody of the song, or using most of the verses, because it brings back such happy memories.

It's really quite a shame since the children specifically asked him to come here, not at home.

That's the worst one. Twelve minutes, three verses. I always loved Scarlet Begonias and the jam between the two songs, but Fire on the Mountain was my cue to drop the kids off at the pool.

Fire on the Mountain and Franklins laid the groundwork for future jams that do tend to go places.....the jam in Buster, Four, and St Augustine by moe. are basically FOTM/Franklins, Moma Dance and Weekapaug Groove are also just 2 chords, but cover much ground.  Without these boring tedious Dead tunes, there wouldnt have the killer jams we have today.  food for thought

Breathe by Pink Floyd is also those same two chords, but they did add a bridge in there....

Breathe also uses *gasp* a minor seventh chord and a couple of ninth chords for color. It's not like a I-V, I-IV, or I-VII churning away like a washing machine on a rainy Monday afternoon.

Sugaree trudges through the V-I during the guitar solos, but the V7 adds a little tension, and song itself has a nice chord progression to plant a few palm trees in the arid soil of the two-chord wank fest.

Sugaree is a two-chord wonder jam. Iko Iko should have a key change after the chorus (like the original, but I guess the band couldn't handle that). ;)

Dark Star is one chord exploration (and a whole lot of feedback).

...and Franklin's Tower is actually three chords. :moon:

I enjoy the modal wanderings of Dark Star (or the Scarlet Begonias outro) because what the band does with it varies so much.
