It's about a real man, Stephen Gaskin. He led a school bus caravan of hippies and seekers out of SaFra looking for their garden. They settled on land in TN that became known as The Farm.

It's fine Augie I lost all my deadhead credit and love around 2007. The Phil and Trey show at the Glens Falls Civic center was the last Dead Music I really enjoyed. I do like Saint Stephen though it's catchy.

I thought there was a rule about baiting so soon before vibes.

I say that the song is about sex. Look at all the in-and-out imagery, phallic imagery, and references to getting hard and then going down (limp).
1) Saint Stephen with a rose
The engorged male organ is pink; in medieval times, blushes and inflammations used to be referred to as a “rose”; confirm rosacea (a type of facial acne)
2) In and out of the garden he goes.

4) Lady finger, dipped in moonlight
(she slips one into yer fartbox)
