So we are planning to go camping next weekend. First time out for the season, as long as the weather cooperates. We live in the Hudson Valley & don't want to go too far (no more than 4 hours). I just can't decide. So Help me!!!!!!

you should go to the nearest National Forest and set up camp where ever you feel like it.  You own that.

North-South Lake in the Catskills. You can do a great day hike to the top of Kaaterskill Falls from there. Highest falls in NY state. Make sure to hike the bottom when you leave (ask the Ranger where to park).

Nunavut?

Excellent choice. My ex and I spent the 1999>2000 NYE there. It was the first NYE for Nunavut. Nunavut had only become a territory (with it's own internal gov't) in april of 99, before that it was just part of North West Territory. Amazing people, surreal environment. Be warned, even in summer temps can drop drop below -10 cel. at night. Winters are harsh if not prepared.

My suggestion though was for the Yukon Territory..it borders the great state of Alaska. Although, you will be left in awe regardless of which you visit, in my opinion.

North of 60. If you can get there, I highly recommend it.

North south lake not open yet :( we love it there. Many area campgrounds don't open until mid month. Any other Catskill suggestions?

I think it's too early in the season for Hither Hills State Park... froze my ass off there one April.

Go Catskills, I'd say North-South Lake but they are apparently closed through Thu May 09 2013.

Here you go... Kelly

Campgrounds & RV Parks in the Hudson Valley,
Long Island & New York City Region

 http://www.nycampgro....com/hudson.php

We have never stayed overnite there but, Interlake in Rheinbeck looked really nice when we drove thru the campground, and it's has great hiking and is near a bunch of other HV historic homes.  We really like Staatsburgh (Mills Mansion) which I think is walking distance from there.

Wilderstein in Rhienbeck is newly restored, also close worth looking for.

I really like Macedonia Brook State Park in Kent, CT. I think it's technically a dry campground, but as long as you're not raging/being overt...

If you ever decide to go there, let us know, and if we're in CT, we'd love to meet you in town for coffee or something. :)

I'm thinking the same thing about Hither Hills. Bummer b/c it's so hard to get in there. I once called to make a summer reservation only 2 months in advance....the guy just laughed at me!

I go to Lincoln Pond off season and stay on the lake off Kingdom Dam rd (exit 30-32 Northway), but long drive for you

Beaver Pond is in my hometown. Not gonna go there  We found a private campground in Ulster. Staying close, will hike Minnewaska, got some fun stuff for the kids. Perfect for the first run of the season. Thanks for your help all! <3

debateable, as katerskill is a "two-drop" of 260ft.Taughannock falls is highest single drop of 219ft. highest east of mississippi river.great trip if you're in the Ithaca area...

Mongaup is great too. Haven't been there in years. But yeah most state campgrounds open either the 9th or around the 16th
