My friend just said that Bobby went down on stage in middle of set. They helped him up, he wouldn't leave so he took a chair and is trying to finish. People saying he's hammered?

Phil report: Bob strained his shoulder in a workout today, went to the doctor. Bet they loaded him up on pain meds and he's totally zonked.

:dunno:

Just got home from the show. During Unbroken Chain he almost fell over. They brought a chair out, he pushed it aside and kept playing. Then he started leaning over, then drooping over. who knows what he was playing. Then he fell. The band kept playing and they helped him to a chair an he pretended to play. Even kept playing after the song ended. They took a break and Bobby was done for the night. China>Rider was the best part of the night. Built to last encore. People were saying he was drunk, but he's old and its been 9 shows, plus 2 after parties and if he was on prescribed muscle relaxers, I guess its understandable.

He's a tough old bastard.    I expect him to be in fine shape on Saturday when I see him in AC.

FWIW, I was at the show at the Best Buy Theater in NYC several years ago when he had a tough time.    The story that seemed to circulate was that he took Ambien to get some sleep, and his family unexpectedly showed up so he never got the sleep he was hoping for.   At the show, he was ...^%$&  useless!!!!    Total train wreck.   People were worried.      For a short while, people believed he had gotten dosed..          Anyway, the next night, he was fine.

got this sent to me by a friend

PORT CHESTER, N.Y. — A belligerent and incoherent Bobby Weir collapsed onstage at about 11 p.m. Thursday night during a Furthur concert at the Capitol Theatre and was assisted off-stage by crew members.

Police told me he was taken away in an ambulance and the Furthur Twitter feed and Website had no update on his medical condition as of 8 a.m. Friday.

Weir, 65, is the longtime rhythm guitarist of The Grateful Dead and the band Furthur was playing its ninth sold-out show in 12 days. His voice and guitar playing had been strong in the previous performances in the run.

“Hope he’s OK. I wish they would have pulled the breaks before it got to this point,” one fan wrote on ThePhilZone.com, a fan Website.

At about 11:10 p.m., the lights went on inside the 1,800-seat theatre and the show was briefly halted as crew members helped an incoherent Weir off-stage.

Some fans left the building, but Phil Lesh, Weir’s longtime Grateful Dead collaborator, opted to play on after a break.

“I mean, Phil almost stopped playing when his buddy took a dive onstage and buddy gets carried out by the audience,” another fan wrote on the site.

Lesh told the audience that Weir strained his shoulder in a workout and the band continued to play an encore set of “Stella Blue,” “China Cat Sunflower” and “I Know You Rider” without him.

At least one fan who left after Weir collapsed verbally lashed out in the front of the theatre that Lesh kept on playing despite the incident.

Weir appeared to limp out on stage to begin the night.

Standing to the left of the stage during an opening set that began with with “Feels Like a Stranger,” Weir appeared OK at first. But during a second set that included “Eyes of The World,” “Uncle John’s Band, “Scarlet Begonias” and “Unbroken Chain,” Weir could barely remember the words to several songs and was increasingly unable to stand up.

He nearly fell into the amps behind him at one point before tense crew members brought out a red folding chair and placed it in front of Weir as the band played on. Weir kicked the chair and continued to play guitar standing up. He then swayed to his left and fell down, stunning the audience.

With the help of crew members, he was assisted up and sat in a red folding chair before nearly falling over several times.

Eventually, after Weir began to play something on the guitar by himself, the crew unplugged his guitar. Lesh and bandmate John Kadlecek walked off stage, leaving Weir alone before he was escorted off by the crew.

The band is scheduled to play Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Saturday.

Longtime Grateful Dead singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia died in August 1995 of a heart attack.

I dunno, he has been rocking for 40 ish years....times a shit ton of shows....we all have our off days that can be blamed on whatever.  In my book I give him a free pass or several since I'm thinking he plays for his fans and not for building up his stack of money.  We all had our not so great days...lol and thankfully nobody posted about it on the internet......

Jazz cats are still swinging at his age and beyond. If you've ever seen Bobby up close, you know how muscular he is. He looks old but healthy. If he's having a bad reaction to the muscle relaxer, maybe mixed with a cocktail or two, he probably needs an assistant to help keep track of his meds.

Bobby seemed to be having a tough time on Tuesday night too.

A lot of forgotten words - JK had to pick up the slack a few times.

Definitely not funny anymore.

Hope he'll be OK.

UC when I seen it last nite I kinda thought the same thing. Phil and John just look at each other and keep playing. Maybe they knew Bobby over did it and this was gonna happen, so they just kept playing? :undecided:

It's not like they just left him lying there...people came out and helped him immediately. The show must go on...Stopping playing wouldn't have helped Bobby or made anything any better, and it would have made a number of things worse.

In Phil's defense, two guys rushed to him and got there a lot quicker than Phil could have. I guess he could have stopped the show immediately. I'm sure Bobby would have felt a lot worse today if he had.

Something my friend posted on FB:

Sending some vibes out for Bobby.......I had shoulder surgery a few years back....many months of pain before and after. I picked up the mandolin because it was too painful to play guitar without painkillers. Really feeling for Bobby that this had to go down on stage. If someone was home from work, hurting, and got dizzy from the meds it's no big deal. But when it happens in front of a few thousand people it is news and subject to wild speculation.
Also feeling for the rest of the boys on stage and I am so impressed (but not suprised at all) that they came back on and finished up the set for us.

his crew was ther to assist.  i think by continuing to play the band might have prevented even 'furthur' distress to the audience.

Having worked with Bobby many years ago. I know he's a strong willed person ( stubborn ) . He was prolly asked if he wanted to quit playing and relax backstage. Something he would say no too. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like too many meds, not enough rest to me, a nurse.  Maybe stupidly combined with even one or two drinks can cause this sort of reaction.  Or as someone said, could have been a stroke--- I hope not!   The proverbial "they" should know today if it was something more serious than meds+exhaustion.  He's NOT THAT OLD!   Geeze, look at some of us out there dancin and ragin our asses off at shows!  65 is not old anymore, IMHO....rage on hipsters!  :hoff:
