Berkeley is a big old hotel that's kind of fancy.  Lots of rooms with sofas and stuff.  Many boardie aftershows have taken place there.  There's another hotel called The Empress which caters to Gays and Lesbians but welcomes all.  I've never stayed there, so I cant reccomend it or not.

the Empress has supremely uncomfortable beds. like sleeping on a rock. YMMV.

As for the rooms... Many have been renovated and updated .. I stay there after every event I work.. Always a decent bed.. Not too many amenities .. But usually a comfortable stay.. I will be at the hotel during that weekend... So I can see if I can get you a room at discount.... How many people you traveling with?

There is also the Hotel Tides on Seventh Ave, ts a boutique spot with an insane Tapas restaurant.

As a resident of AP, and a musician who has crashed at all of these places, you cant beat the Empress Hotel.  Price is better, staff is nicer and pays more attention, and no one will send police to your door if you happen to like staying up late.  The Berkeley-Carteret had the band moe. evicted one late night post-Stone Pony show, which is pretty unbelievable.

Have fun, where ever you stay.

as an employee of berkeley.. i agree.. their front desk staff are kinda.. blah.. but that's changing.. the front desk manager for past 4 years has recently left..  changes are coming..   but, for traveling light and not planning on having a 20 person rager in a small room.. then i reccomend the berkeley (plus i can get a decent price)
