 i've been thinking about getting one for a while now but i know nothing about juicers, what sort of features am i looking for? brands that are good? it's a gift so i don't want the person to spend a small fortune on it.

i thought we had a thread about juicers but it must have been purged. thanks in advance! :)

We've got the Breville JE95XL.

Lots of power. Not to hard to clean. MB made a big batch of carrot-apple-celery on Sunday and put it in small jars to bring to work throughout the week.

i can't go over what she originally sent me which was $119. wouldn't feel right about it. i saw that compact one on amazon and it had mostly 5 star ratings but the bad ratings complained of leakage and wasteful too-big chunks left in the pulper, some said the pulp was so wet that clearly the machine was inefficient. also, at least two machines blew up on first use and the other comment i saw a few times was about difficult cleaning and many little parts. thoughts?

ohhh yeah, one more i just remembered - that the machine has so much power that it actually heats the food as it's juicing, affecting nutritional value.

thanks Chach!! :)

does that one work well for things like spinach too?

It does, but it's a bit tricky as leafy goods want to blow up and out of the insert. The key is to force a big wad of spinach into the spout, and slowly press down.

insert = chute? the pusher doesn't help much with leafy things?

Right, the chute/insert/whathaveyou.

It does, it is just getting them in at the start. I've had a few go-rounds where I leave the machine running while I load it with my goodies and there is a wind current through the chute, so leafy greens blow back out. Hence I wad them up and immediately jam the press down on top.

I really dig on the Omega 8004/8006 juicer... It's a masticating juicer so it's not as quick to make juice as the centrifugal juicers, but it extracts more goodness (juices are richer, darker and pulp is drier) and can be used on heavy duty stuff like wheatgrass which centrifugal juicers can't handle. You can make peanut butter, pasta, and the like with the Omega as well!

The masticating juicers are more expensive, but they are the best at extracting juice, so that's the one I got after selling my centrifugal juicer.

I read this thread title as "getting jucier for m'birfday - - what do I want?" and wondered why it's not in L&S.
So I can see both the pros and cons in updating the title. :funny1:

This thread makes me realize that my juicer is older than some boardies. I got my Acme Juicer in '79 or '80 and it still cranks it out!

I found so, too - hopefully it can help you narrow down your choice as it did for me.

All my stuff arrives with the mover tomorrow - gonna be good to be able to juice again! I'm trying to *not* pull all our stuff out of the boxes it has all been packed into since we are only here 3 months before finding more permanent digs. Somehow I think that's gonna be tough...
