GONE IN 60 SECONDS: FULL TEXT OF SCIENTOLOGY 'KNOWLEDGE' SPOT

To the curious. The inquisitive. The seekers of knowledge.
To the ones who just wanna know.
About life.
About the universe. About yourself.
Not cute questions.
Big questions, ones that matter.
To the rebels, the artists, the free thinkers and the innovators.
Who care less about labels and more about truth.
Who believe non-conformity is more than a bumper sticker.
That knowledge is more than words on a page.
You're young.
You're old.
You're powerful beyond measure and the fuel of that power is not magic or mysticism, but knowledge.
The things you see.
The things you feel.
The things you know to be true.
Sure, some will doubt you.
Let 'em.
Dare to think for yourself.
To look for yourself.
To make up your own mind.
Because in the eternal debate for answers, the one thing that's true is what's true for you.

I have a friend whose family got into Scientology. None of them seem to ever really be happy and after 30 seconds into any conversation with you they are trying to get you to come into one of their places for a free audit. I have read more than the just their Dianetics book (re-branding in the 80's). est. was a breakaway group, and they are now called The Landmark Forum.

NPR had a spot about them the other night.  Didn't they officially organize as a church to get out of a bunch of back taxes.  Seems they gathered dirt on IRS auditors and got out of a bundle.

Pretty much and they infiltrated church members into IRS jobs to snoop.

Operation Snow White was the Church of Scientology's name for a conspiracy during the 1970s to purge unfavorable records about Scientology and its founder L. Ron Hubbard. This project included a series of infiltrations and thefts from 136 government agencies, foreign embassies and consulates, as well as private organizations critical of Scientology, carried out by Church members, in more than 30 countries;[1] the single largest infiltration of the United States government in history[2] with up to 5,000 covert agents.[3] This was also the operation that exposed 'Operation Freakout', because this was the case that initiated the US government investigation of the Church.[3]

Under this program, Scientology operatives committed infiltrationwiretapping, and theft of documents in government offices, most notably those of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Eleven highly-placed Church executives, including Mary Sue Hubbard (wife of founder L. Ron Hubbard and second-in-command of the organization), pleaded guilty or were convicted in federal court of obstructing justice, burglary of government offices, and theft of documents and government property. The case was United States v. Mary Sue Hubbard et al., 493 F.Supp. 209 (D.D.C. 1979).[4][5][6][

Well I want to see the documentary and feel Scientology is whacky I don't get why people are so critical of it but accepting of other religions. It's not like the Catholic Church or any organized religion, for the most part, is filled with upstanding citizens.

You will understand better after watching this.  They strong armed the IRS to get Religion status after a $1 billion tax bill.

They basically have Sherpa's working for them.  These people sign some contract that essentially gives their life to the Church/Cult and get paid $.60 an hour, that is right 60 cents.

Also, when you join you voluntarily many give up their personal secrets.  If you ever try to leave they will threaten to release it to the media or friends and family.  They say it is helping you stay on course.

If you ever visit a Scientology location and talk to someone about it and give them your info.  You will receive a post card annually from them asking you to come back.  One person states they went in 8 years ago and still get post cards.

It is so F'd up on so many levels.

I did not realize how much of Clearwater they own.

The moto of Scientology is to attack any one who speaks out against the Church.

The entire thing is a tax scam.  They strong armed the IRS by suing every one they could including personal IRS agrents.  Total of 2,400 law suits.  Then the IRS started to negotiate with the church.  Basically they said these law suits will go away if you give us religious status (tax exemption).

This makes me mad on so many levels.

Scientology documentary on HBO.

Lets discuss.

It was crazy and lots of cringing.

Really fascinating documentary. I think I need to watch it again.

I had the same question as Gregoir (what makes Xenu the Galactic overlord any crazier than Zombie Jesus?) until I saw this doc.

For starters, the evolution of how Scientology actually came to be makes it different. The fact that the founder (LRH to those who know him best, lol) previously published his work as Pulp Comics definitely detracts from the credibility of Scientology as a religion. It was a comic book before it was a religious text.

Also, aside from Mormonism, I don't know of any religions that are based solely on the gospel of one person. Indeed, Buddhism is based on teachings of one man, but these are philosophical in nature. They are not testimony of something incredible.

Perhaps the biggest difference, though, is the private aspect of Scientology. You cannot find out some of its basic tenets without paying. The creation story, for lack of a better term, is not even told to you unless you literally buy it.

I realize that some religions are pretty forward when it comes to "donations", but AFAIK they don't withold fundamental information. By information, I mean "basic principles and the foundation of the religion".

I certainly see how you can say that most if not all religions have had very questionable practices at times. But the evolution and systematic business practices of Scientilogy, IMHO, set it apart.

Aside from this, at face value, it just seems really strange. I realize that most religions come off this way to outsiders, but Scientology goes above and beyond in terms of odd beliefs and questionable practices.
