Mine is without question, WEHM here on Long Island. 92.9 & 96.9  they stream live, so I can listen at work too.

What's yours?

Yea, the reception is a big factor for me too....We are too far to get any of the NYC stations, but I can get Conn. stations.   I can catch IASW on WPKN... Thats cool.

No commercials, good music if not great or just okay. Never anything youve heard over and over. Definitely the first place I've heard a lot of new music.

Since August I've won tickets from them for Lucinda Williams at the Bowery, Galactic at the Cap, Phil Lesh and Friends at the Cap, and Umphreys McGee at the Beacon.

92.5  The River, they occasionally play The Dead and I've even heard RMB!  Limited DJ shenanigans and commercials make this my favorite.  Right up the dial, 92.9 they play all sort of stuff from the 90's, makes me very happy!  Im very sad that most of the radio stations I used to listen to are gone now.  Like FNX, and the Mike, which was all random music!

To answer this question seriously, back when I was living in Philadelphia it was WXPN 88.5...

Because of the boardie connection and just the awesomeness of the station... WPKN is also great :-)

Beyond that sometimes NPR, and both Jam On and the Grateful Dead channels on Sirius/XM

but I don't really listen to the radio all that much anymore

NPR can definitely be boring, and I don't like everything that they have but they really go in depth and present stories in a very journalistically sound way, and the features and interviews are often times very enlightening.  It's also interesting to listen to the more local NPR affiliate in my state because they talk about state issues you don't always get to hear about.  So if I'm in the car and not in the mood for music tuning into NPR can be nice sometimes.

The NPR affiliate in Albany is really good, I dig their morning news/talk programming. also dig Mountain Stage and some of the documentary stuff they air. I don't listen to it all of the time, but I'll check it out for a bit in the car, on the way to and from work.

102.7 WEQX been my station since maybe 7th Grade and they have always stayed independent and on top of things.  they get a bit overkill with some songs but I always find something new to listen to when I have them on.

you knew i was gonna chime in on this thread, didn't you? i must, i'm a radio junkie! i know people joke about never listening to radio anymore, with all the array of choices, from archive.org to pandora, i can see that. but for me, i'll always want to hear a live dj to enlighten me about the music i'm hearing, make me laugh, give away concert tix, say something stupid, etc...it's why i do all the radio work i do...

...HGRNJ just segued into Look Out Mama > Tired Eyes, from Neil's Tonight's The Night LP...what Radio station is gonna offer you those selections all in a row?

  • "Morning Dew" on WBAI in NYC, streaming on the archives ~  archive.wbai.org  ~ check out Don's "Howlin' for Hubert" Sumlin Tribute from 2/3/13 or our Ian Hunter (Mott The Hoople) Interview from 1/27/13...great stuff, if i say so myself...and while I'm sure Royal is right to claim WDST played Robert Randolph's CD releases first, I can tell you Morning Dew was spinning Taper Todd's DAT recordings of Robert Randolph the same night he played at Wetlands, cuz that's how we roll...

  • WFUV - streaming at www.wfuv.org  ~ I listen a lot in the car, or when HGRNJ doesn't have a live DJ. great station, chill & entertaining DJ's, some from the legendary WNEW days, great Live In-Studio Performances, etc...Great syndicated shows like SOund Opinions, Grtaeful Dead Hour, American Routes, Mountain Stage, etc...

  • WPKN - I like David's Sunday Brunch...

  • WFMU Insanely good  Talk & Very Cool Psycho - Rockabilly.

  • Little Steven's Underground Garage (Q104.3)

I really like listening to radio in general.  I have an ipod hookup in my car, but usually go back to radio. I like to hear what people are saying and listening to in different places I drive through.  except for central New York that shit is just god awful all Jesus or Country all the time.

I LOVE 91.9 WUMB NPR's music station.

There's a daily Dylan everyday at rush hour, and the mornings are a delight. The program hosts actually have something interesting to say without being overboard or obnoxious, which I appreciate especially first thing in the morning.

And when I'm in the mood for news I listen to NPR, and I'm a big fan of Moth Radio. How long do you think they've had those trumpets going at rush hour? I remember them in the backseat of my pop's car when I was 5.

WERS Emerson College Radio, good college block format for genres for it's music programs.  Good Rock, Hip Hop and Reggae block shows.

The only blocks I don't like are weekend ones, Broadway Musicals, Children's songs and the Jewish Folk Music.
