U.S. Officials Condemn Release of Secret Guantanamo Files
The Obama administration, after being served a reminder that WikiLeaks continues to torment Western countries with its trove of secret documents, lashed out at the website and several news organizations for revealing previously undisclosed details about the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
U.S. and European newspapers, using assessments first obtained by WikiLeaks, described an inconsistent and questionable process used to evaluate detainees suspected of terror ties. The New York Times, which published several reports on the documents, described cases where seemingly low-risk detainees were held at length, while prisoners who posed a legitimate threat were released.
Obama administration officials stressed that the documents may not reflect assessments that have since been made by President Obama's Guantanamo Review Task Force -- they said those files "have not been compromised to WikiLeaks."
However, the officials suggested the disclosure could hurt U.S. security and condemned the release.
"Both administrations have made the protection of American citizens the top priority and we are concerned that the disclosure of these documents could be damaging to those efforts," said Ambassador Daniel Fried, the Obama administration's special envoy on detainee issues, and Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell, in a written statement.
They stressed that WikiLeaks obtained the files "illegally" and called the decision by news organizations to publish them "unfortunate."
"These documents contain classified information about current and former GTMO detainees, and we strongly condemn the leaking of this sensitive information," they said.

Can anyone explain to me how pulling back the veil on this topic is damaging to citizens?
Because I for one only see it hurting the administration's integrity.
Project much?

Regardless of the integrity of the news piece, there are other articles available from several news sources that kangfirm that 1) the documents that were released are consistent with the context. 2) the White house condemned the action and pulled the "national security" card yet again.
Search around. There are several other sources that make the same assessment.
Here is just one:

By the way, the poster who posted did not post the entire opinion piece under cover of news.
Did you see the "Read more" followed by the link to the rest of the piece?
I'd imagine most people here can understand that that means there's more to the piece at the link...most people

Wearing a Casio Enough to Become Terror Suspect
By Simone Utler

AP
This Casio F91W-1 watch is taken as a sign of a possible terrorist by US intelligence.
The watch can be found the world over and costs only a few euros. According to secret documents obtained by SPIEGEL through the WikiLeaks whistleblower platform, US interrogators at Guantanamo Bay identified potential terrorists by the watch they wore on their wrist.
They're cheap, easy to buy anywhere in the world and, apparently, are the hallmark of a terrorist: a digital Casio wristwatch -- strictly speaking, the black F-91W model or its silver variant, the A-159W. The United States military considers this watch to be "an indicator of al-Qaida training in the manufacture of improvised explosive devices (IEDs)" and with it the identifying feature of a potential terrorist.
This information is contained in the secret documents about prisoners at the Guantanamo Bay US military prison camp in Cuba, which have just been released by the whistleblower website WikiLeaks and SPIEGEL, along with other international media. The " Gitmo Files" comprise the records of 765 former and current Guantanamo prisoners. Thousands of pages labeled "secret" and "Noforn" ("Not releasable to foreign nationals") contain detailed information about the prisoners, their life in the military prison, the conduct of intelligence agencies and their treatment of the prisoners.
In one document, titled "Matrix of Threat Indicators for Enemy Combatants" -- a field guide of recognition and classification of "enemy combatants" -- various items are listed to help interrogators assess a prisoner's capabilities and intentions. With the aid of this 17-page catalog, the Joint Task Force responsible for operating the Guantanamo prison camp were expected to determine whether a suspect could be a possible terrorist threat, if he had the opportunity.
In the field guide, special attention is given to the items a suspect had in his possession at the time of his arrest. The Joint Task Force speaks of "suspicious items," including a satellite phone, military radio/transceiver, $100 bills and the Casio F-91W watch.
Used to Detonate Bombs
The mere possession of the watch, which can be purchased for a few dollars and is worn on the wrists of millions worldwide, is the enough to make a man suspect.
The footnotes of the document explain that the Joint Task Force identifies the watch as "the sign of al-Qaida, (which) uses the watch to make bombs." It's known that the Casio would be given to trainees in Afghan terrorist training camps for this purpose, where the young men would be taught how to use the watches in the building of bomb detonators.
According to the secret document, an estimated one-third of all Guantanamo prisoners who wore the watch "have known connections to explosives, either having attended explosives training, having association with a facility where IEDs were made or where explosives training was given, or having association with a person identified as an explosives expert."
In the documents on individual inmates, the possession of the Casio watch would be listed in item 5.b as "property held." Here, too, the wristwatch will be mentioned in the footnotes as a distinguishing feature of al-Qaida.
According to the Guardian newspaper, more than 50 detainee reports indicate the ownership of a Casio watch, of which 32 prisoners wore the black F-91W and an additional 20 prisoners wore the silver A-159W at the time of their arrest.
'The Watch Points to Mecca'
Even in the so-called Combatant Status Review Tribunal, which gives the final decision on whether a prisoner is considered an enemy combatant, the watches were given particular importance, according to transcripts of the military tribunals of Guantanamo prisoners, which were first released in 2006 after the Associated Press successfully sued to make them public.

The claim about Adil Hadi al Jazairi Bin Hamlili is made in secret reports on detainees at the US military's Guantanamo Bay prison camp obtained by the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.
The Algerian, who was captured in Pakistan in 2003, was described by interrogators as a "facilitator, courier, kidnapper, and assassin for al Qaeda".
They also believed he had withheld important information from Canadian and British intelligence and (was) a "threat to US and allied personnel in Afghanistan and Pakistan".
The files, handed to The Guardian and Daily Telegraph by WikiLeaks, also indicate at least 35 terrorists held at Guantanamo had been radicalised by extremist preachers in the UK.
Abu Qatada and Abu Hamza are identified in the documents as having recruited and sent dozens of extremists from all over the world to fight against the West in Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The revelations come after WikiLeaks released more than 700 secret files documenting the inner workings of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre in Cuba.
It also appears the US government suspected the BBC of being a "possible propaganda media network" for al Qaeda after a phone number for the World Service was found in the possession of several suspected terrorists.
But a spokeswoman for the corporation said: "Independence and impartiality are at the heart of all BBC World Service output.
"The service has interviewed representatives of organisations from all sides involved in the Afghan conflict so it would not be surprising that a number believed to relate to the BBC Pashto service was in circulation."

This time the bullet cold rocked ya
A yellow ribbon instead of a swastika
Nothin' proper about ya propaganda
Fools follow rules when the set commands ya
Said it was blue
When the blood was red
That's how ya got a bullet blasted through ya head
Blasted through ya head
Blasted through ya head
I give a shout out to the living dead
Who stood and watched as the feds cold centralized
So serene on the screen
You was mesmerised
Cellular phones soundin' a death tone
Corporations cold
Turn ya to stone before ya realise
They load the clip in omnicolour
Said they pack the 9, they fire at their prime time
Sleeping gas, every home was like Alcatraz
And mutha fuckas lost their minds
Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high
Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high
Run it!
Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high
Just victims of the in-house drive-by

No escape from the mass mind rape
Play it again jack and then rewind the tape
And then play it again and again and again
Until ya mind is locked in
Believin' all the lies that they're tellin' ya
Buyin' all the products that they're sellin' ya

Just victims of the in-house drive-by
