67-year-old rams farming tractor into sheriff's cruiser; deputy injured during arrestMonday, June 20, 2011
GREENWICH — A 67-year-old town man was arrested Sunday after ramming his farm tractor into the patrol car of Washington County sheriff’s deputies attempting to serve an outstanding warrant.
Vincent M. Cristaldi was charged with two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, one count of assaulting a police officer and one count of third-degree criminal mischief, all felonies; as well as one count of resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
Sheriff’s deputy Greg Danio was injured while trying to subdue Cristaldi during a scuffle that followed the ramming, sheriff’s deputies said. Danio was treated and released from Glens Falls Hospital with pulled tendons and a pulled muscle to his left hand and forearm.
A second deputy at the scene, Todd Ritchie, was not injured.
The incident occurred at around 2:45 p.m. Sunday in a field off of Spraguetown Road when Danio and Ritchie arrived to serve an arrest warrant to Cristaldi. The warrant was for trespass and harassment, deputies said. Further details of the incident were unavailable.
Cristaldi saw the deputies’ vehicle enter the field and drove his tractor into the passenger side of the deputies’ cruiser, according to the deputies. Cristaldi then backed up and hit the deputies’ vehicle a second time before they could exit the vehicle, the deputies said.
Cristaldi, who was towing a hay baler and a wagon behind his tractor, was taken into custody after a short struggle, deputies said.
He was arraigned in Greenwich Town Court, sent to county jail and then released on $5,000 bail.
Cristaldi is scheduled to return to Greenwich Town Court June 24.
Danio and Ritchie were assisted at the scene by deputy Travis Earl and sheriff’s Sgt. Nick Spiezio.
