Is Cracking Your Back Bad For You?

Have you ever heard the old wives tale that cracking you knuckles will give you arthritis? At this point it almost seems like common knowledge. So is this true and if so does cracking your back also cause arthritis in your spine?
First off cracking your knuckles does not cause arthritis and so cracking your back also does not cause arthritis, but cracking your back is a serious matter. Most people crack their back because it feels better when they do it. So we must ask the question “what did your back feel like before you cracked it?” The most likely answer is that it felt tight or there was some back pain. This is an important piece of information because very likely if you find yourself cracking your back on a regular basis then you are putting a band aid on an undiagnosed back problem. If cracking your back was helpful for these type of conditions then you wouldn’t have to keep doing it for relief. Over time most people actually find that they have to do it MORE OFTEN to get the same effect. This is a sign that your back problem is actually getting worse.
So cracking your back is not bad for you per se, but the underlying condition that creates the need for the cracking is bad for you. If you find that you crack your back on a regular basis you should get checked out by a back specialists who can screen for spinal problems. Visit a chiropractor, physical therapist or orthopedist before your problem gets worse.

Unbie likes Camaros. That's gotta be at least related to some disability, right?

'unbie' does not seem like the traditional abbreviation for unbroken (if there even is one)....

and yes Ginger... that will be the last time I ever mock an incoming hurricane :)
