Hi.

I am doing well and living in my new home with my girlfriend and 'Kidzilla'. I conquered my quest to be an Ironman this past September in Wales after three years of busting my ass and I have now initiated another four year plan to officially qualify for Kona come my 45th birthday year. In the meantime, I'm building up to row a marathon, have joined a relay team to swim across Lake Ontario for charity this summer and have I temporarily shelved my hippie tunes and reverted back to rediscovering music from my university days. I'm still blogging up a storm daily and I have even launched my first honest effort to complete an entire novel, so, all is well with me. I hope you are all doing equally as fine.

Oh, and I still can't figure out how to load an image into my profile so my technical skills are about the same level as shitty as ever. lol!

Ciao.

Manchester. Turns out that they provide pretty good motivation for cardio workout and fst-paced interval sessions.

Rather than start new threads in the future, I'm just going to keep updating this one.

I have an exciting prospect this morning as I'm having my 'lactate threshold' tested.  No, it has nothing to do with lactating or breast feeding you silly hippies.  It's a test devised to formally test one's aerobic endurance (i.e. how powerfully and how long can one race on 'the edge).  Specifically, it's the upper limit of blood lactate at which the equilibrium occurs between lactate production and lactate removal in my body.

I know, "Hehehe, he keeps saying 'lactate'", right?

So it definitely promises to be painful.  But where I'm not necessarily looking forward to the suffering, I also recognize it's one of my current strengths to be able to push through these periods of discomforts and I'm interested to see how well I officially 'test' amongst my peers.  I'm doing the test alongside my former coach so I sense about an hours worth of extreme 'one upsmanship' coming on.

I'm considering this as a significant turning point in training for my future goals, so wish me luck.

Okay, damn that was tough!!  Like, REALLY tough.  Blogpost to follow, but the gist is that my body does not remove lactate as quickly as others making me "less efficient" at performing at high intensity intervals (which may not be surprising given that my last years worth of training has been at a steadier, long distance pace, not short, high intensity intervals).  However, I tested through the roof in being able to push on regardless...even beyond those who were performing more "effectively", meaning i'm able to block out the pain more successfully than others and percevere.  So, 'yay me' for being able to suffer...I think.

So, what to do with this newfound information?  Hmmm.

Whatever.  Time for dinner and a movie.

Completing Day Four in the pool today with the coach.  She has promised that's it's going to be a killer.  Damn, who would have thought that changing your stroke technique was such hard work (Hehehe...I said "stroke technique"), but I'm starting to see some improvements in my 100m times.  Whoever would have known you have to actually slow down to go faster?

At least I have the afternoon to relax on the couch with the cats and then some Thai food later with the 'Around the Bay' runners I helped coach this year.  :)

Enjoyed a nice day today starting with a nice Easter morning's long run while the family was off at church, followed by a big breakfast, coffee and then movies all afternoon on the couch with Kidzilla.  I can probably consider myself now as somewhat of an expert on Disney movies, although, I did mange to get her to sit through an entire Western movie with me (even though she slept through the last half).

Hey bud, yes, Mont Tremblant is on the radar for, possibly, 2015.  I'm going back to short course this year and have some fun to let my body recover a bit and then I'm going to make a run for Kona.  I had friends who did Mont Tremblant last year and LOVED it.  Not to mention it being within a relatively easy car ride for us so I wouldn't have to worry necessarily about bike shipping, air fares, etc.  Problem is, it is already getting a reputation as an "easy qualifier" for Kona, so I may choose to go the harder route and take on a more challenging course come qualification time as my strengths lie in suffering and determination, not necessarily speed, so I'm leaning towards Lake Placid at the moment.  I will definitely do it though.  :)

Other Iron opportunities in the coming years:

Cedar Point

Ironman Florida

Ironman Kentucky

Montreal Espirit Triathlon

Challenge Roth

Ironman Canada (or Challenge Canada)

I currently have a great team working with me and they have allowed me a lot of success, but if I'm ever in the need you'll be the first person I contact.  Thanks for the offer.  :)

NASCAR Takes Interest / Refilling the Lake

Tourism officials plan to make lemons out of lemonade with the situation – and on Sunday July 7th NASCAR will hold the Cayuga 500, a 6 lap, 500 mile race around the dried Cayuga lakebed. Officials are offering free admission to the race to any attendees who bring at least 32 ounces of water to help refill the lake.
