So nice that who is needed? what does this mean?

Should have read, "not needed."

Running thru the streets vs playing in an arena. The difference is really obvious, and anyone who cant see the differences is just grandstanding.

I'd be willing to bet there were resources used for the football game that could have been put towards relief efforts.

While the game probably used less of those resources it still would have taken some away.

IMO if the reason the race was canceled was taking relief resources away, then the game should have been canceled for the same reason.

That is what I had thought. Then again, no doubt there were feelings of normalcy elicited by the going on with the game. I find it interesting where different lines are drawn.

Anyone who thinks that this thing should have been run clearly thinks money is worth more than people. Very oversimplified but that is what it boils down to I'm afraid.

The line is drawn when it is clearly unsafe to run a race thru debris-filled Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhatten. Quite obvious to most anyone.

ask Chris Chrisite, NYC has nothing to do with the football.

i'm not really sure i'd trust a stadium secuity guard with much more authorit
should we start consripting most workers ?- if they can lift they can help clear debris
swing a hammer, rebuild a house

Seems we save most conscripting to sending people off to kill people.

No it really shouldnt. Unless the forball players run across all five boroughs of NYC before kick off.

If the streets they run on were filled with debris then that's reason enough not to run it. Not knowing the route I have no idea about that.

Did those attending the game need to use those roads to get in and out?

So the resources, electricity, transportation, gas to get to and from the game, etc are of little to no consequence to the whole?

so you are saying the peole that went to the game should not have and given the gas to others ?
what if they took public transportation ?
should they stop all busses that use gas ?

back to the resources used for the game
so how many officer man/hours do you think were at the game vs the amount that would have been used for the race?

I honestly can't believe we're even discussing this  The football game is in one location w/ >90% private security and EMS personnel. It can't even remotely be compared to the many hundreds of police officers and EMS personnel to secure intersections, set up barricades, treat the afflicted, etc. along 26+ miles of a marathon route through areas that are suffering.

Seriously? WTF!? :dunno:

There is that, which no doubt is a factor. Perhaps if there were marathons run on a more regular basis for a certain number of weeks each year then they would have continued as well, perhaps using alternate routes and such. Also interesting is how some musical events have been cancelled, while others have gone on.

I know around here there's always city police details used in conjunction with private security and I'm pretty sure there's always a fire dept. detail also.

No doubt it would be less than would be needed for something like the marathon.

But if the reasoning for not running the race was because it took resources away from relief (and I don't know if that was the reason) then I think it's wrong to play the game because that also would involve taking resources away from relief.

If the race or the stadium are in the declared disaster zones I don't think the amount of resources being used matters.

Running. Its not a sport, it's locomotion. Once upon a time, a warrior ran about 25 miles to herald victory at a battle, then promptly collapsed and died.

How is this feat now considered "sport"?

Not quite. Your entire argument for running this is based upon money. Therefore creating revenue from this event is more important then helping people. Pretty cut and dry.

The race doesn't go through S.I., it starts on the verrazano bridge and then proceeds into lower Manhattan. The city and the runners already declared it possible before the public outcry and everyone became a NYC disaster relief expert on resource consumption.

Why are we even still talking about this?
We already decided "we can't have a charity event with so many in need of charity."

I'm looking for a good "Austrian Economics armchair quarterback" logo, but it seems there isn't one. Seems like there aren't enough real world members supporting this theory to even have a major country utilizing it, much less ponying up for a cool logo... :coffee:

That's right, they don't. Everyone is far more interested in telling everyone else how to live and what to do. Leaving people alone is extremely unpopular these days....especially in Econ.

But of course, that's only slightly off topic. Just slightly. :coffee:

wrong again...that's what you want to think so you can feel better about yourself. creating revenue to assist in the relief effort....

the canceled race brought 1500 runners to help Staten Island I hear...prolly could have been 15,000 additional volunteers on Monday had the race gone on.

If you can show me the progress made by the now undiverted personnel to search and rescue and what have you from yesterday against the progress that would be without that extra help I may forgive your stupidity in your remark.
