Hurricanes form over warm water. Most of the ocean water off the west coast is quite cool

Many east coast 'canes start as depressions between Africa and South America.

Off west coast I think, as G said too cool. They tend toward the southern coast of North America, hitting Mexico and Central America.
I believe that ones that head toward Asia are typhoons

Also, terminology. Rotating storms in the pacific are called Typhoons.

unless they hit the West Coast of North America then they are called hurricanes

Hurricanes and typhoons are the same thing. I'm no meteorologist, but I think where they hit land has to do with the direction in which the Earth turns.

Hurricanes travel from East to West as the Earth spins from West to East.

Typhoons are hurricanes west of the international dateline in the Pacific...

They call them something else in Australia

oh there are hurricanes out there all right...it's just the gov't doesn't want you to know about them
