no power. no heat or hot water. No hot water means... Anyone? Anyone?
NO HOT SHOWER!!!!! Hahahahaha!!!!
Instead of bashing those dead cars outside with a bat,I am packing some bags and driving about 300 miles away. There are rumors of hot water there that are believable. Gonna high 5 some national guards as I drive off. Bye!

Hunkering down for another night here and will leave in the AM. I'm actually going even further into flannel shirt territory than ur neck of the woods. After 12 days of urban decay I'm yearning for some proper redneck livin'.
And hot water

day 15 - no power here.... Actually we have learned the bldg does have power but they are intentionally keeping all power / heat off to prevent residents from staying there. the bldg still hasn't been deemed safe and needs to pass inspection code....as with most other bldgs right by the water.
I'm like shit yo... it's still standing, good enough for me.

Again though, your govt should not get off easy on this. There is now way you should be a week behind NJ in getting your power, your lives back.
Its like the storm hit you guys a week later, or that was just when your officials reacted.
I'm pissed for you.
But first lets get your juice back. Then riot.

I hear ya.... but I feel more for the people north of us who live in big residential neighborhoods.... I can't see why they still have no power. Up in Oceanside is where Cuomo keeps visiting and people are throwing shitstorms.
It does suck, but think a lot of people in my area have the same attitude... if you're really gonna get upset at the recovery time from hurricanes, you prolly shouldn't live on a barrier island.

i hope to go over with them tomorrow, if the city will allow it. we're still trying to find a licensed contractor and they can't handle this on their own.
we lost a friend to Sandy last Saturday. Mark 'the barber' Caramanna (Ortley Beach) was allowed to visit his shop in Lavallette over the weekend...businesses were given first access because things were getting really ripe in the business district by mid-week, from what i can gather.
upon entering and seeing the destruction of his business, Mark suffered a massive heart attack and died on the spot. he leaves behind a wife and two college aged children. RIP Mark

Cancer + chemo + dementia + being away from her home + storm devastation = not so happy mommy. Today? Happy mommy. I am scheduled to arrived on 11/15 and staying for a few weeks to care for her in her home and volunteer in Rockaway. Cleanup is huge but my hometown folks are not giving up.

my inlaws were able to visit their home for the first time today. the town of Lavallette organized buses to bring residents to their homes for short scheduled visits. the downstairs is a total write off and mold's beginning to grow which puts the rest of their belongings at risk if we can't get contractors on it soon...but it definitely could be a lot worse and i'm so glad they finally at least know what they're facing.

Yeah, hot water! The dude who gutted my grandma's basement got a new hot water heater for the house today. We has hot water!
"hot water heater" why do you want to heat hot water?
indoor running hot water one of man's greatest accomplishments! now if we can just get the drains working better.

tomorrow, Jason is going over to the island for the first time with his dad. they're pulling out carpeting and whatever else they can handle in the 4 hours they'll have there. boxing up stuff that is important to them that the mold could get to, and mayyyyybe a visit from the contractor to assess whether the house needs to be torn down and rebuilt from the ground up. seems like there may be a foundation issue, and the mold is a huge worry, especially with his parents' health concerns...we shall see.
i have an interview in a little while, but afterward i'm visiting the local relief center to see what's needed and what i can do to help. got calls and emails over the last couple of days from even more out of state friends wanting to do something to help, which is great, and makes me thankful to have the caring friends that i do.
thanks, friends

so, I've got my 'transitional' digs setup in Westchester county. One of my cousin's doesn't use the upstairs of their house... just spare bedrooms... so I'm settled in pretty good there. At least I'll be close to the next James BongBBQ.

The thing that's hard is like... I am not starving or have no place to stay... so I'm hesitant to really hound FEMA for help. There are undoubtedly people who need help more than me. Nevertheless, I've paid taxes every year since I was 16, and 3 weeks of 'mobile' living in order to get to work here every day costs a lot of extra money. Still no timeframe on when our bldg will be liveable or if they will let us out of our leases.... so ya feel stuck.
The reality is that the only thing FEMA can really offer people is money. They have said many times that there is no room to setup temporary shelters down here, there are no hotel vacancies within 100 miles and the apartment vacancy rate is under 3% in a lot of the affected areas. You're stuck until you can go back home.
Anyways I'm just venting. Life is good.

Nancy, I'm staying downstate to play fun time with moldy storage unit this weekend.
Karen, feel free to give me a holler. Anyone who has my # is welcome to pass it along, if she needs it.
Time to go pick up my mom's new ride.
