I bought a box of A&H washing soda....  It is the same exact stuff as soda ash...   $4.00!

a guy @ Pearl Panits gave me that tip when they were out of soda ash a long time ago.

When i went back to the same store to re up on the dyes this year, the new guy was pushing the soda ash on anyone who was even looking at the dyes on the rack. Small package was like $4.00

now if there was only a bigger market, we could make a killing

1 large box would prolly make 10 small packages = profit

20-25 shirst and some sheets tied over the weekend, going for the soak, dry + dye this time - the colors looked brighter on the last batch i did this way.

did a dozen shirts this weekend.   Colors were great.  But I think I didn't batch long enough.   After rinse out and wash, they faded.  And not just a little.  All the reds looked rust color.

Goodwill is gonna get a bunch of tie dyes...

Shame too, 'cause I was doing a new (for me) method of tying.  Came out great...

So Feck, You have success with tying, then soak, then dry, then dye?   I always soak>dry>tie>dye, but wondered if soaking while already tied would work well.

I usually tie, soak, dye while wet, rest - bagged for 24-48hrs then wash.

never really had any problems, excpt for when i rush the waiting part.

I got a head of myself last time and a lot dried before i could get to dye them.

i think the real keys are ph, dye strength and time.

the more time, the betterer.

changing the steps / order of the steps will change the results - all part of the variety available.

same goes for unwrapping and washing right way, vs drying after untieing then washing.

washing right away, the pattern will stay sharper, after, it will bleed more.

dry dying seems to have more control on the dyes with less bleeding, wet dying the colors bleed more.

depending on how much fixer is used, i think i can get the rubber bands/string tighter and keep some fixer out of where the bands are, adding more variations in shading.

every step changes the reslut.

the combinations are endless.

i attempted the mandala folds again, getting better at tying them, which seems to be the key, along with the pleated folds.  if the angle is not right, you just wide up with circles. i also ironed a few to see how they compaire to un ironed ones. crisper lines (?)

I used to dye while wet, but the last few times I dyed dry.  I used a lot less dye, it seemed to soak better.  I also started using string instead of rubber bands, lines are crisper, that is for sure, but it takes a bit to get the dye to soak up.

This is a good video for folding a mandala

i'll have to see if i can see them from home, can't see much when i'm in the office, fb get's me the no surfing warning :).

i did look at a few before i started - that fold was not in the book i have.

i noticed i used less dye on the dry dyeing too, partly what motivated this attempt.

i am dyeing ( couldnt resist) to do up a few sets of sheets/pillowcases!

considering some curtains, too...

i want my bedroom to look like wavy gravy's wardrobe except less 'rainbow-y' and more blue/green/purple-y :D

You will need to have an exposed apple sack showing to pull off a proper wavy

Any style you looking for?  Major colors?

I can do sheets pretty good.  Usually top sheet, bottom sheet, 2 king size pillow cases.  I'll find out cost.  Prolly around $50 for the set.  Plus the cost of the dye.  I'll let you know.

I use artificial sinew for tieing.  The fold is a basic 16 fold.  I'd have to show you, hard to explain, but easy to do.  Kind of like folding a paper airplane.  With a sheet, since it's not square, I fold over the ends, that's why the pattern repeats horizontally.

the mandala video you posted starts with the basic 16 fold, i found it very useful and pretty easy to follow.

i've been meaning to go back and look for the dyeing part of that.

the folding of the mandala portion is also a little different than some of the others, 45 degree angle vs something more obtuse.
