he is finally (!) getting some meat on his very most bony parts, like his hip bones. we keep brushing out his dreads and he keeps getting new ones. he has the most interesting fur! we call him our little hippie cat who just came off phish tour
he is soooo affectionate
still a little jumpy like he hates it when i try to wipe the goonkie stuff out of his eyes. the other cats are completely used to me doing that. he's also finally not acting completely starving all the time although he is the peskiest one when it's food time...
all in all, it's quite amazing how well he is, considering how starving he was when walked into our house about 4 months ago

ditto with diamond and the eyes and the food, he may never get over the joy of being fed. is his fur really fine? it looks like it's just like diamond's only she's not a long haired cat
Posted 25 January 2013 - 06:02 PM
yes, it's super super fine, dreads up overnight! it's good to hear about diamond having similar traits
Posted 29 January 2013 - 12:27 AM
the way his eye markings are, he always looks PISSED
my marley used to love a bag bed, too...if it was left open enough, he would go inside and play till he busted his head through the closed end
shaggy looks great
Posted 29 January 2013 - 01:35 AM
that's like an 8" thick featherbed where he comes from.
Posted 30 January 2013 - 05:39 PM
there's a piece of cardboard he loves too! if someone were to randomly come over to my house they would probably wonder why i don't pick up stuff like this and why there are folded towels next to the oil filled heaters

shaggy goes to the vet today! i'm happy and nervous all at the same time.... the husband is taking him. i'll know more in a few hours.
Posted 14 February 2013 - 03:57 AM
because we had no idea what was wrong with him and he was obviously not well....
so... he's probably a senior cat. 12 or older. no diseases but he has a heart murmur (not a bad one like red had) and he has a hyperthyroid condition that he's probably had for a long time... he is ravenous constantly and does not gain weight. he's only 8.5 lbs! and he's huge! long and fluffy but skin and bones underneath. so, we'll get meds tomorrow. he was also vaccinated, de-wormed, poked and prodded and was super sweet the whole time.
he might not have a lot of life left but what he has will be magnificent since he chose to live it with us
Posted 14 February 2013 - 06:09 PM
he really took us in he literally walked into our house and announced he was starving. i couldn't even fathom taking him to the humane shelter, even though i know they are "no kill". he chose us.
Posted 16 February 2013 - 04:43 PM
ha! same with Diamond. nice that he was so good for the vet, Diamond is a howling hissing fighting scratching maniac.
glad to hear there's nothing majorly wrong and yes, he'll know lots of love from here on out.

Shaggy picked an awesome family
So did Diamond
Cat people are the best
Posted 17 February 2013 - 02:25 AM
oh nancy! your poor vet!
i thought tiger would be like that because he thinks he's so fierce but when we're at the vet he just clings to me like a baby monkey.
Posted 17 February 2013 - 01:42 PM
yeah, ophelia is a nightmare at the vet, too...yowling like someone is plucking whiskers, clawing to get away like we are all monsters...no bad experiences for her to be thinking of, not sure why she is like that?
she has always been insecure, maybe its that simple...who knows...
i would love monkey hugs at the vet! marley was good at the vet. he would cry a little but then explore the room...miss him
Posted 18 February 2013 - 12:26 PM
Tiger's a total monkey hugger!
are you doing the grooming? would he let you cut the fur away on a bigger scale to let it 'start over' in spots? it might be so damaged that it's just retangling
Posted 18 February 2013 - 04:18 PM
we are going to take him in for professional grooming but waiting till it gets a bit warmer since he still spends a little time outside. it's funny, he actually really prefers to be an indoor cat. he thinks the outside is way overrated
Posted 24 March 2013 - 11:42 PM
so... shaggy is now "shavey"... at least for awhile until his fur grows back! it's so nice getting rid of that matted fur for him. he was pulling mouthfuls out every day. the vet said it was probably pulling on his very sensitive skin.
also: thyroid meds are working and he gained 2 lbs in a month! he still has a long way to go... but he's doing so good
Posted 25 March 2013 - 03:36 PM
my daughter-in-law dubbed him that
we also found out he's a male calico. very rare. one in three thousand calicoes are male. so he's also a genetic mutant!
Posted 26 March 2013 - 12:29 AM
my vet said he's only seen one male calico in his career
Posted 26 March 2013 - 01:24 PM
Male calicos and female orange tigers are not very common.
Posted 17 April 2013 - 10:43 PM
so shaggy has gained another pound this past month! that's 3 lbs total since we started him on the thyroid meds still waiting on the call from the vet about his blood work but i'm thinking that he's fine and won't need to have it surgically removed
Posted 18 April 2013 - 02:33 AM
well, his numbers actually went up (not good) but he is gaining weight so it's kind of weird. we're going to increase the dosage one more time before we consider surgery. i know it's a simple surgery but they have to put him under and he's really a pretty old cat, i'm thinking like 13 or 14... i hope this works because i really don't want him to have to go through that...
Posted 18 April 2013 - 11:52 AM
Crossing my fingers that the higher dose does the trick!
Posted 18 April 2013 - 02:16 PM
thanks karen! he just seems to be doing so well... we'd really rather not have to put him under, even though the vet says it's a very simple surgery.
Posted 18 April 2013 - 02:29 PM
summer, i will admit that i have a kitty crush on yer fella there
i hope the meds do the trick!
any new pics of the pretty boy?
Posted 19 April 2013 - 02:01 AM
i'll have to take some new ones the one with the husband is the latest one i have...
Posted 25 April 2013 - 03:02 AM
you can see his little pink belly skin pouch. we're filling that back up
Posted 27 April 2013 - 02:06 AM
that photo was for you, dee!
he's really the sweetest cat in the world. very gentle and affectionate
Posted 27 April 2013 - 01:53 PM
he's a great looking cat, sums!
glad to hear he's doing well.
Posted 31 May 2013 - 07:25 PM
shaggy update: we did it! his tyroid numbers are great! no surgery!
the only drawback to these meds is that his kidneys might not have done well but we had 2 kidney tests and he's not having an adverse reaction. i couldn't be happier
gained another lb too. that's almost 4.5 lbs in 3 months. happy cat. happy humans
