So are you having the rehab check out the insurance for you? I think they usually pre-qualify you in advance of your arrival. Sorry if these are stupid questions...just trying to help. This must have to so with his drug of choice or dependence...I am just guessing.

awesome. I work for an extended care place - post rehab - for young men. I know we pre-qualify people's insurance for the clinical costs of our program.

insurance is ridiculous!! WTF am I paying so much for??? We are not sickly people and therefore don't have to be paid out on much. Then when the insurance is needed, they are so reluctant to pay.
The place he was trying to go to is kinda expensive and insurance will only pay 1/3 of it. So what then?? It seems as if rehab is only accessable for those who are super rich or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, on state insurance. Those who land in the middle are screwed.
To think of all the people who are required, forced to be in rehab and are not receptive to accepting the help, then you have someone who is ready and willing but completely denied. Its so discouraging.
But still, I shall remain hopeful

I'm skeptical about the professional recovery industry. There's a well-established tradition of people attaining long-term sobriety by joining a fellowship and practicing the Twelve Steps with the guidance of a sponsor. It costs a lot less than paying the industry experts for the service, and the insurance company may be willing to pay for standard behavioral health care as a supplement. Just my $.02. I hope he finds the recovery he's looking for.

He goes to fellowship meetings. He prefers AA as opposed to NA because AA has more old-timers and better grasps on sobriety. He struggles with the higher-power and what it is to him. He will get there. I tell him that whatever he identifies as HIS higher power, he must be sure to give thanks and acknowledge it often.

It sounds like he's building a good foundation. I'm still struggling with the concept of a higher power, but I don't actively fight it any more. My personal and very non-professional opinion is that he might be better served in private therapy along with what he's doing rather than a 28-day inpatient program.
OK, one joke. Did you hear about the NA group that gave out gold coins on anniversary night? They went out and had them bronzed.

this is one of my many problems with rehabs and insurance companies. It is the very point that proves "Recovery" is a BUSINESS to these people.
but in your own words "someone who is ready and willing" shouldnt need a rehab. there is a FREE place to go with MANY poeple there who are also more than willing to help for FREE!!

Everything you've said is all very true, roo. I think he is just looking for something that is more intensive. And seeing as this is really the first time he has felt so ready and been so committed, I am all for it. It speaks volumes that he is so determined to seek intense help rather that deny the truth, run away and talk his way out.
