Do you have any connects?

I do. If you PM the date and number of people in the party, I'd certainly look into it for you.

I haven't tried Vietnamese but there's a shit load of places along Dot. ave. along with some other decent places.

Not sure I can spend the last weekend of the summer in town, but if I'm around I'm in. If you need a getaway driver through the ghettos of Dorchester, there's no one in our group that knows em better than me. ..well Joker perhaps, but I bet his reflexes are less primed. :gregoir:

I know the streets and while the reflexes aren't what they used to be I know enough to have my back against the wall and to sit facing the door no matter where we go ;)

Eco has it right as long as you're not looking like a victim and not an asshole (relatively speaking) nobody will fuck with you especially in a group. And a crawl around here IS about the drinking and not the food.

Dot Ave has a lot of different places lots of Vietnamese (haven't tried any) American and Irish joints.

If you're looking for a walking sort of thing Southie has a lot of new places springing up both on Broadway and down on the waterfront.

Never had any problems in Dorchester, except for one time when this 100lb plus redhead fella tried robbing Tabbooma outside a store. That plan did not work too well. ;)

I don't know anything about Dorchester, Mattapan, Southie or JP dinning (done some drinking in those parts). But if I were leading this tour I'd aim to center around the South End. DInning options there are pricey, but on a crawl you will probably order apps and small plates most places. I don't know the best chinese food in china town, but Ban Mi is great counter vietnamese. I don't care for the thai restaurants in this area (overpriced and mediocre). Jacob Wirth is a good stop on your way to South End. Mike and Patty's make great sandwiches but only open for lunch and breakfast. Masa has a tapas menu and good sophisticated coastal mexican fare. Addis is good ethiopian (and the only game in town for ethiopian). Barbara Lynch is the celebuchef behind B&G and the Butcher Shop. Beehive is known more for hip cocktails and atmosphere. Coppa is really good. Oiishi is the best and most expensive sushi in town. Meyers and Chang has a great rep, but I've never been. I also threw in my favorite thai place in the city, kinda terrible ambiance but great pad kee mao (drunken noodles)
I would stay away from most of the places on Newbury and Boylston. There are some really good ones, but most live off their location, not their food.
Ban Mi 15 Beach St
Jacob Wirth 31 Stuart St
Mike and Patty's Sandwichs (8am-2pm)
Masa 439 Tremont
Beehive 541 Tremont
Addis Red Sea 544 Tremont
B&G Oysters 550 Tremont
The Butcher Shop 552 Tremont
Coppa 253 Shawmut
Oiishii 1166 Washington St
Meyers+Chang 1145 Washington St
Pad Thai Cafe 1116 Boylston

There are lots of other great places that are more spread out, but worth it if you have time and appetite. I love East Coast Grill in Cambridge, and if you went that way there is also brazilian BBQ down the way and a few other bistro that have sprung up along cambridge st. Harvard and Central Sq in cambridge both have their highlights. And Highland Kitchen in Somerville is worth a trip. But for a crawl I still think south end is the place to be.
Enjoy yourself.

Would it be crazy to start at Belle Island and move on to Chinatown??

what is the mode of transportation?
its is about a 15-20 minute walk from the nearest stop on the subway, orient heights on the blue line
gastronomically speaking, it sounds awesome! :clapping:

Yeah I'm in if we can hold it in Drugchester (Dorcester). Gotta mix up the dining experience with a cultural experience minus the $100 a meal at some places that are full of stuck up c words found all over the money areas.

if you spend $100 a meal in chinatown, then you are either going to the wrong places or ordering gold-encrusted dumplings! :dunno:

FYI - Coppa is an easy walk from Chinatown if you feel like swinging that. Another place you should really consider is Myer's and Chang, which is an even closer walk.

Bummed I work Saturdays and can't make it.

bummer you cant come...i like learning new things from passionate people

both of those places interest me greatly, however, scare the bejesus outta my pocketbook
just sayin...

this is all great to know
thanks!
i, too, think there isnt a lot of decent thai in chinatown
not sure why? i have my favorite thai places but they are all in the burbs (lucky for me!)
drunken noodles is one of my favorite dishes, in any ethnicity...but its gotta be spicy!
i also live less than a mile from the burb location of masa
i love their tapas sampler on 2 for one night and i ADORE their sunday brunch
i have always wanted to try ethiopian!

Can I get to these places via the T?

it would take some time at mbta.com using the trip planner, but yeah, i think most of it is traversable, noting that belle isle is a bit of a walk (share a coupla cabs?)

oh, btw, IN... :funny1:

Thanks for the invite. I'll be in MA that weekend, but have plans that day. Picking the fiance up at Logan and seeing a few friends before going to the Cape to do final wedding prep.
I used to work in Boston restaurants, but live in DC now. I miss these places, but at least I am beginning to find the goods in DC.

use the mbta trip advisor and it can tell you what stops they are on, and the like
you are right near multiple lines i think, depending on where you stay
but you can make it to cambridge, say, in like 20-30 mins, easy

Well if the other side of the river is on the table I have several suggestions. I am really enjoying reminiscing about these spots. Man I miss Camberville living. I hope you have a big appetite and deep pockets to enjoy this.

Somerville
Davis Square
Redbones- best bbq in town great beer selection on tap
Dave's Fresh Pasta- shop and restaurant
R.F. O'Sullivan- IMHO best burger in greater Boston
Highland Kitchen- great food and ambience, really love this place
Union Square
Journeyman- pricey and only serves chefs menu but supposed to be quite good, was brand new when I moved away so have never been
Tacqueria la Mexicana- has both a counter service side and a sit down restaurant. My fav mexican in greater boston, but prolly not worth it to a CO visitor
Sweet Ginger- my goto thai when I lived in this hood
Cambridge
Porter Square
Elephant Walk- Cambodian/french
Annapurna- Nepali haven't been but heard good things
Anna's Tacqueria- loca burrito chain with great grilled veggie burrito (also in Davis sq)
Asian Food court at 1815 Mass Ave
Addis Red Sea- ethiopian also in South End
Chez Henri- upscale spot with a great cubano
Lizard Lounge- basement music club has Primate Fiasco playing that night- pub grub upstairs is also good but not sensational
Harvard Square (tons of food, not much that I really love)
Burdicks Chocolates- hot chocolate is their specialty
Harvest- great for a full meal, but pricey
Mr. Bartley's- famous burgers but not as good as RF O'sullivan
Charlie's kitchen- twin lobster roll and nice outdoor beer garden, but divey interior
Central Square
Falafel Palace- counter service and very good
Green Street Grill- New American with great cocktails and interesting menu
Pepper Sky- pretty good thai
Rendevous- french/american local ingredient
Craigie on Main- if I had been here more than twice I might call it my favorite restaurant, but its pricey. need reservation on Sat
Toscanini- great ice cream
Kendal Square
Emma's pizza- great slices, I think as good as Santarpios which has rep for best in the city
Area Four- new spot that I got brought to for an excellent breakfast sandwich
Hungry Mother- highly regarded but I've never been
The friendly Toast- very buzzed about breakfast place, but service was so terrible when I was there I didn't go back
Inman Square
Punjabi Dabi- roadside indian from a carryout counter
Olecito- the carnitas and fish tacos are pretty good here
East Coast Grill- perhaps my favorite restaurant. Seafood with all sorts of tropical cuisine preparations
Christina's- homemade ice cream
Allstar sandwich- owned by ECG and very good sammies
Tupelo- Southern Comfort food bistro setting
Midwest Grill- brazilian bbq
Clover- vegetarian food truck turned brick and mortar, have eaten at the truck but not at the resto
MuQueCa- Brazilian seafood

Cambridge....fuc-ing wierd people live and hang out there! Images people weirder than hippies, add in some hipster, two parts metrosexual, 5 parts my mommy takes acid and dresses me and that describes the people. I did a bunch of concert photography there a couple of years ago for some really good bands but the freaky crowd would of made for more interesting photographs. Oh and parking is a complete nightmare with mostly resident parking.

ok, josh...i work all day today but then i am off all weekend and monday (i have an interview! :ura1: )
anytime you wanna tiny chat so we can nail this down, let me know
i will try and check in if i am not online a lot
saturday is gonna be crappy so i bet i will be around quite a bit but sunday i am going to my local farmers market in the am and then hope to go wander in the woods for a long time after that

i looked up the walk from orient heights t station to belle isle and its about .6 miles, a straight shot down saratoga street
i can do this no problem but wanted to make sure people knew to wear some sensible walking shoes
and if its really crappy out, we can take a cab or two...

note - a ride on the t is 2 bucks a whack so make sure to have cash on hand for that although there are machines that take cards (i am pretty sure? ), there are sometimes huge lines and sometimes they are out of order...

i will make sure i print out an overview of the t map and walking directions for our final destinations in chinatown
our two destinations so far are 500 feet apart so that will be easy

josh, do you like hot pot?
i have only done it a couple times but i bet there is really good authentic hot pot i just havent discovered yet
my issue is that every time i go to chinatown i *mean* to try something different but i usually park in the lot across from my place and the juicy crispy ducks and pork hanging in the misty window call me inside...
i mean, its cheap and delicious ALL the time so i have a hard time rationalizing risking somewhere else

another note - hong kong eatery is CASH ONLY (a big reason their prices are so low, so its a good thing!)
and we will probably get some looks as my party is often the only white people in there (an excellent sign, in my book!)
only a limited supply of alcohol there, as well, no bar - just some wine and beer - but i dont go there for the beverages...

we can talk more about this over the weekend...

ok, so i want people to see how non-spectacular belle isle is
its in east boston so the airport is really close
when i lived in winthrop (its on the east boston/winthrop line) we knew to just stop talking when a plane was passing too close to hear each other
we called it the point shirley pause  (the name of the point i lived on)
same rule is in effect here

you cant see it, but the water comes right up to the fencing that is around the restaurant and the lot out back
and the wood fence you see is on the bridge that passes over the channel that belle isle is on
wish there wasnt a leprosy sign in the background though :dunno:

havent been there in too long
excited! :bliss:
