I have 44 guests all together. I know I want our 6 kids at a certain table and hte 4 people that are helping this wedding happen at a table next to us. But as for the others? We sat down and attempted a seating chart. It's in a resturant with tables of 4 or 6. We're thinking maybe even just letting it be a free for all. What do you guys think?

I would ask the restaurant how many people they plan on over setting for. Usually it's about 5-10 percent, so only 2 to 4 seats in the case of your party size. If they go with an exact count, people might not be able to sit with who they want to; then you get too many people at too small of tables, it's uncomfortable for the guest, difficult to serve yada, yada

Yea, I already thought of that. And they said they would set each table a if there would be 6 at each. Although some will only have 4.

we're doing the free for all, but we have half the # of guests...i would do assigned seating, just cause it'll be less mayhem that way

I vote for assigned seating. You can group folks together that make sense (for the most part)

ya, you kinda gotta do it, the ones that will only have 4 will have extra room for friends to join them if you choose...unless they all kinda know each other...then fuck it!

We didn't do assigned seating and while I think that was cool I later felt bad for some guests who didn't get to sit with other friends (table was full) or some guests who didn't know other people.
I honestly couldn't be bothered to sit down and decide where everyone was going to sit.

Thats what I'm thinking. I have exactly 6 friends that I know will sit together and my family, which consists of 6 people. ANd the rest is his family, and well, I don't really care about his family.
No I only said that because it looked good writing it. BUt really, his family will figure it all out nicely. I dont' want to sit his parents with his sisters and husbands. THey see them all the time. But I don't want to sit them with uncles and aunts that they find annoying. I will let the mood fit them. If they are having a nice chat during cocktails with the uncles and aunts they can decide to move it to dinner, if they so choose. Ya know?
I think thats what i'm going to do, yup. I think I just decided.

we did it free for all. people who knew each other just kind of gathered together. during the (very short) speeches, greg did ask everyone to mingle, which they did. :)

at my friend's rehearsal dinner this weekend it was a free-for-all, and i started out at the table w my friends, but then i decided to "take one for the team" and sat w/ the parents & cousins, so my friends could all fit at 1 table. i think if they had done assigned seating, people who like each other would have been seated together. just my .02, but of course, i'd be happy to take one for the team, for you. not so sure about Diddy, tho  he's probably better off @ the kid's table anyways

And you have got to know me by now, I will crack skulls, bride or not. I will and always do, make sure everyones comfortable. You guys are in the kids room.
Sorry, but our time with our friends'll be later too, so we have to have the old folks with us. SO they can gawk and stuff.
It's going to be beautiful ya know?
