View Full Version : My Photos
Lets start by bringing a few of the old posts back.
.
I guess in the end you just look back and realize how much you've done....
.
Finally got the Lotus shots finished up. Hopefully there will be a review up on Hidden Track http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/review-lotus-and-telepath-irving-plaza/
Sold out show, excellent 2nd set, packed floor, and a ton of underage kids (16+) so at least the beer lines were short
Really tough getting close to the front though, hopefully they'll move on to bigger venues with photo pits in the near future....

also made this little guy back at the beginning of the baseball season. Marc was going to do an interview on Hidden Track on baseball
and the Yankees and whatnot, but due to touring and studio work, never could get it together on it. I guess using it for
announcing the winter tour made sense..

So got a chance to see the Gene Ween Band at Mexicali last night.
Very well attended show for a weekday. One set, lots of fun, my first time seeing Gene Ween perform
and even Mikey from O.C. Choppers showed up to watch.
Got these shots done quickly, hopefully I'll be able to pull a few more out tonite.

well I was suppose to shoot Gene Ween Band again on Wed at Williamsburg Music Hall, but unfortunately it looks like it might be canceled.
So instead I tried working on some old shots with a new style
Bernie Worrell from moogfest.

and also figured I'd get together my best shots of the year and put them altogether.
So here they are in a slideshow, hope you like them.
I got Trey, Page, Snoop Dogg, moe, Umphrey's, Disco Biscuits, Lotus, Levon Helm, Keller, Tea Leaf Green, Raq, U-Melt, and more...

lets see the year end reviews have come out on jambands.com and Glide Magazine and it looks like I've got a shot in each of them.
Jambands happened to crop my shot of Jesse Miller of Lotus from earlier in the year http://www.jambands.com/Features/content_2008_12_17.00.phtml
and Glide happened to use the Scott Metzger shot from Gene Ween Band at Mexicali
http://www.glidemagazine.com/bo2008/scott_metzger.php :)
Ok on to some new stuff. Jambands.com put up a couple shots for their Photo of the Day archive. One's of Gene Ween and the other is from the Toubab Krewe show from early in the year, guess Dean wasn't kidding when he said he liked those shots.
http://www.jambands.com/PhotoDay_Archive/
.
got a chance to see the Disco Biscuits on the first night of the run at the Nokia, here's a couple to start with, hopefully have some more tomorrow.
Hidden Track posted them to their site as well

and looks like we're gonna sneak over to Bustle in your Hedgerow tonight for one of the last shows at The Knitting Factory, before the venue gets booted out of Manhattan....
Ok so I got 3 done of Bustle in your Hedgerow from the Knitting Factory, unfortunately none of Marco, due to the fact he was playing in almost complete darkness. Pretty good sized crowd for a Sunday night, but luckily we were able to squeeze into the 2nd row and grab these shots.

should have it posted to Hidden Track sometime later in the week.
I was pretty excited with the close ups, but as the night progressed...well the shots from the crowd got a little more fuzzy, similar to my thought process

yeah, we were pretty hectic the entire time we were home we sure squeezed as many visits in as possible lol....we'll see you guys next time :)
yeah I hear ya, I had the same thing going on, trying to see everyone's family and still make it to a show or two.
so the review written by the lovely Carla went up on Hidden Track

so lets see, I haven't been shooting too much of late, actually been packing and moving and currently have my gear in two states (of course that's really only 5 miles apart, but still)
Got a chance to see The Brew at a loft party in Brooklyn on Saturday. Reminded me of my old place, although thankfully this one had heat from a wood burning stove. We used to have one too, but the fire marshall didn't react to kindly to that....
anyway here's a few shots, the band was good, excellent covers of Billy Jean and Have a Cigar, and a few good tunes of their own.

a good show, Reed is finally up to speed and is a more inclusive part of the band, singing harmonies and even leading on a few songs. The band has expanded their set lists back up again, so hopefully they're back on track.

Truly great picts man.. thanks
thank you :)
Well walking in to Wiliamsburg Music Hall for Tea Leaf, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The Mexicali show was maybe 1/2 full and the show was decent, but not overwhelming. Thankfully it was completely different in Brooklyn. The place was filled, the band jammed, and we had a great time. Unfortunately the lighting was pretty tough. Almost all of it was back lit and shooting straight into the camera sensor grrrrrrrrrr...

anyway gonna see Terry Reid at BB Kings tomorrow night. He's the guy who Jimmy Page first asked to join his new band after the Yardbirds broke up. Terry passed and suggested another singer to Page, Mr. Robert Plant, and of course the band became known as Led Zepplin....

WOW.. gotta agree with those guys.. Coke one is my fav!!
Thank you guys, I'm getting a ton of great feedback in the Coca-Cola shot.
Here's a couple of Terry Reid. It was the first time I'd ever seen a show at BB Kings with seating on the floor. Terry was interesting, I had a heard some recordings of his from 30 years ago, and while he still has a great voice, he no longer has the range or the high notes anymore. He did two tunes I knew, one Brian Wilson song and another song of his, that The Raconteurs had covered, "Rich Boy Blues"

He loves it and now has it up on his website. He's gonna be in NYC at the end of the month with Fiction Plane
a band that sounds pretty close to The Police (and has Sting's son in it) so hopefully we'll get to see them.

Holy shit jeremy. I'm always floored by your live work but that coca cola shot is a fucking mindbender. I'd have a fucking gallery wrap of that on my wall if I took that. Hell, I wish I had a gallery wrap of it for MY wall.
Truly amazing capture. What a perfect execution! A+++++ work.

where are the party pictures?!
where are the party pictures?!
hidden in the camera somewhere.
But, I'll take a look this weekend and email them over to you.
Lets see, got another chance to shoot the Gene Ween Band, this time in Williamsburg. Fun show, 2 hours with a short set break in the middle, another one with tough lighting. I'm starting to hate this place for photography, which is a shame since its a really nice place to see a show.
The only thing that saved most of the shots, was the use of flash. I found if I jelled the flash with a 3/4 CTO it gave enough fill without calling attention to it.

gonna see Cornmeal this weekend at the Blender for the moe. aftershow and hope to do Sharon Jones before, but am running into a little problem with that one...
I got a few of the Cornmeal shots done.
First set was all them and the 2nd was almost all with Chuck and Al from moe.
Some really fun stuff including Shady Grove and Paul Simon's, "I Know, What I know"
Hopefully I'll add a few more later.
Boy I love shooting here, the lights at Blender are easily the best in the city, plus it was nice to get a few shots of Al and Chuck, since moe. appears to be limiting photo passes this year.

So before Cornmeal on Friday night, we went over to the Nokia to enjoy a little Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Really enjoyable show, lots of songs off of 100 Days, 100 Nights and a few new ones that should be on a new album soon. Not a packed show and about halfway through security pretty much got bored and gave up working and we were able to go all around and sit and stand where ever we pleased. :)
.
Also I'm really happy with the way these have come out. I had a chance to shoot Sharon Jones about two years ago and the results were not all that good.

I love your shots Jeremy.
The clarity and crispness of each shot is amazing.
How do you do that?
ok, well if you're serious, here goes ;)
I always try and keep the face in focus (unless there's a specific reason not to)
if people see that the face is in focus, they assume the rest is too. If you look at that last Cornmeal shot, the neck of the guitar and the fingers are out of focus and poorly exposed, but really all you care about is the nose, the eyes, and the hair being in focus, so it works.
.
I also took around 500 shots for the Cornmeal and Sharon Jones shows (this is a bit of an extreme, but there was alot of good lighting so I kept shooting). I would say probably 100 are out of focus, 100 are too dark, 100 are poorly framed or boring. Usually I can get that down to 15-20 shots out of that many that i actually like and can work on.
.
In photoshop I try my best to fix the exposure with the brights and darknesses, get the colors to look decent (especially trying to save the shots in complete red)
Then finish it up with a little sharpening for the focus points and unsharpening in the unfocused areas to reduce the obvious noise issues.
.
.
if you weren't serious, then I guess if you take enough shots, one or two has gotta work out, right
.
you got any fun Disco Biscuits ones from the past week?

yeah for any photo I think I'm going to work on, I shoot raw. With an 8 gig card, I can still fit around 500 shots on there, plus you can always delete the duds when there's a break in the action. I've found raw files really do give you more range to work with, from saving blown out highlights, to saving some shots from the "red light of death" and turning them into a decent color.
and thanks Jema, I like that one alot too :)

Absolutely on the RAW tip jeremy.
And thank you thank you thank you for that little tip regarding live photography, I've never really put that together in my head but it all sure makes sense. The eyes are amazing the way they gather information in a split second and send it back to us sometimes a little bit altered like in the case of the cornmeal shot the eyes give us the illusion of focus because we're familiar with what a guitar is and should look like.
How awesome!
Thanks for that man.
Another big tip and another thing to think about out there in the field.
Yeah Brody, a lot of it is just looking at good photographers and asking, what the heck are they doing, how are they framing, what's in focus, things like that. A really good book for it is Jim Marshall's book "Proof". On one side of the page he's got the final image and on the other is all the negatives. So it becomes interesting to see the thought process and also what he kept and what he threw away

Nice shooting, man!
Gene Ween show at Music Hall of Williamsburg was rescheduled for 2009-02-07
Did you happen to make that show? I was fortunate enough to be there...
anyway, can you give a little insight as to your equipment and camera settings, for us amateurs?
I am guessing you used ISO 3200, at least 1/250 sec, no flash ?
Thanks
Moose

3200 would most likely cause a snowstorm of noise unless JG's using some nasty gear and I've missed it.
More than likely it's an issue of using say 200-400ISO and an f/1.8 or faster lens. I'll let JG fill you in on the details.

Lets see they're up above on post #31. That was a pretty tough one and I did use flash a bit. Its actually something I've been trying to work on lately, even for better lit bars to get a bit more fill or to get slight a reflection in the eyes.
In fact I think all of the Dave Dreiwitz's shots have a little bit in them, for me its about finding that sweet spot between being able to actually see some detail and shouting out I'M USING FLASH
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1196/3267585094_de37cf9f39.jpg
It was the only way I could get any front lighting on him. Its going slowly (learning to use flash), but its really a tool I need to have, it kills me when I realize I'm not going to get any decent shots that night when I leave a badly lit bar.
Really I love Williamsburg as a fan, with all the levels and the multiple bars, but for shooting there's no pit and more importantly not much front lighting, so I'm really starting to hold a grudge against it.
Hopefully I'll figure out something before The New Deal gets there.
Anyway, for the settings go here http://www.flickr.com/photos/gordonimages/sets/72157613530788895/
click on the image and then below on the right click on "more properties" it'll give you an idea of where I was shooting. The Nikon D300 does go up to an ISO of 6400, but I really try not to take it past 1600 or 2000, it really starts to get noisy and you lose all the detail that I try so hard to get. Usually I try and sit between 800 & 1600 depending on the show.
(check out this guy with the Nikon D3 at ISO 5000, it almost makes me cry  )
www.flickr.com/photos/friedpixphoto/3289143478
Looks like I was shooting around 1/125 for this one, but yeah if possible I try and stay in the 1/125 to 1/250 range, obviously sometimes you need to go lower, but you get a ton more misses that way.

JG
Do you use noise ninja or anything similar? your shots are remarkably noise free for the ISO.
JG
Do you use noise ninja or anything similar? your shots are remarkably noise free for the ISO.
Not quite noise ninja, I tried it and didn't feel like I had enough control over it. I'd say some of the low noise is the camera itself. When I had the D50 the top ISO was 1600, but the sweet spot was around 800. For the D300 the top ISO is 6400, so sitting around 1600 still gets you a decent shot and as long as you don't push it too much farther in photoshop, you'll still be alright.
The other half of it is photoshop. Usually noise becomes apparent when its in an area of flat blackness or the out of focus areas, if its in the detailed area you don't notice it as much because there's so much going on. So at some point in the process I create a 2nd blur layer (either gaussian or smart) and then proceed to slowly erase out the areas on that layer that are in focus
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3576/3320446891_77d71b0950.jpg
in this photo (shot at 1600) normally the nose would show up in the smoke or in the black/red area at bottom right, but by blurring these areas it gets rid of the noise (and actually makes the face and hands look sharper)
.
ok lets get back to some photos
.
We got Pete Francis (formerly of Dispatch) and Barefoot Truth (out of Mystic Ct) at the Canal Room. Sort of light poppy music, a little Blues Traveler (with the harmonica) and Phish-esque (Sample in a Jar)
Very young crowd, but lots of room to dance and get up front, nice venue and terrific lighting too, I actually got the ISO down to 640 a few times, which was nice. :)

lets see wanted to run through some odds and ends here.
First off finally got a couple shots done from the Fiction Plane show at Arlene's Grocery. It was a fun quick set, although I think the highlight for me personally was having two of the guys sign my shots of them from Camp Bisco (silly me I only had a black sharpie and the shots were mostly black... duh)
Here's two of the shots.

I wish I had more, but it was a tough shoot, mostly at an ISO 1600-2000 and pretty much whenever they moved around it got blurry or I lost focus (oh well)

and has me on assignment to catch the former lead singer of The New Pornographers at the Bowery on Sunday, so that should be an interesting experience.
So here are the shots from the AC Newman show at the Bowery. Lots of fun, definitely a nice change of pace seeing an indie show. The opening act was Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and Carl Newman told a story about how the last two opening acts they had were Vampire Weekend and the Fleet Foxes and how funny it was to have bands zip fight on by you

so a couple of interesting stories.
I'm pretty excited, I happened to sell the following photo from Camp Bisco (and partial rights)
.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3554/3383581616_4a13dd66c5.jpg
Pete Wilhoit, (from Fiction Plane who I've been emailing with a bit) needed a new publicity photo for his website and a magazine interview that's coming out so we poked around the hard drive and luckily I had one he liked. Damnnnn I love Camp Bisco.
.
Also I got a funny call from my editor at thewaster.com. Les Claypool is coming to Terminal 5 on Saturday and I had put in for a photo pass. The editor wasn't quite sure he could get one but said he'd try. Well it ends up as a condition of us shooting the show, he now gets to interview Les himself! http://www.thewaster.com/MAIN/Features/les%20claypool/032409.html
So needless to say we're both excited for the upcoming show. Its suppose to have acrobats and fire dancers and a host of "oddities" can't wait for Saturday.
So weird night to say the least, it started with getting turned down for Les Claypool at Terminal 5 and ended with some great shots below. In between however there was a drink stolen, Carla getting soaked in beer, and me getting dragged by my hair for about 15 feet by two extremely drunk 40+ year old women.
So the two lesson learned from the evening,
1) Always get the cell phone of your contact, otherwise you might be standing out in the rain calling the publicist’s office at 9pm on a Saturday.
2) Nothing good can come of escalating a disagreement with a severely drunk woman even if she’s completely in the wrong, if she’s more willing and eager to take it to the next level.
.
btw the last time I had seen P-Groove was at Mexicali with the new keyboardist, and I have to say they were a bit underwhelming, but tonite was fantastic
and they did a very tasty Naive Melody to finish off the night.

It's something like a brah, but headier. I think
So I had the chance to shoot The New Deal on Wednesday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Excellent show, ran until 1:30 in the morning as they played some newer stuff and lots of old ones. Tough lighting conditions as always at Williamsburg, but at least I got a few shots (although no real good ones of Jamie) Everything is shot at around 1/200 1600iso 1.8 or 1.4. I think all of these are primes except one of the long shots of Darren, the drummer. The problem with shooting with primes of course is that the depth of field is so small, that unless you're dead on you're gonna miss the focus (which happened a ton that night)

its an sb-800 off camera with a cord in my left hand up high. Its got a small collapsable softbox on it, tilted away on an angle, which is probably why the dog's got a line on the top of his eye instead of a square. He's also hiding under the 19th century dining room table (a bit of an odd flag, eh?)
I'm still just playing around, trying to get a feel for these things, in some ways its like completely starting over again. Apparently we're gonna do a newborn baby shoot in a week or two, so I better get practicing
btw Brody, I've been watching these website reviews by Zack Arias. He's got some interesting things to say about websites and photography, I feel like I'm learning a bunch just from listening to how he critiques photos. (reminds me a bit of my studio crits in architecture school...)

alright so we had a chance to catch Lucero on Saturday night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Someone mentioned I should check them out and wasn't quite sure what I was getting into. Southern Rock tending towards punk with crowd surfing, the occasional stage diver, mosh pits (leading to a few haymakers), and showing your appreciation to the band by chucking your full beer at them from across the room. Yeah this wasn't your typical hipster show. Luckily the band was smart enough to go into a few ballads when the crowd really started to get out of control and I thought the band itself was pretty damn good, but would I go again....probably not.

lets see photo info, the shots were taken at 1600 iso, at f/1.8 & f/1.4 (with the 30, 50, and 85mm primes) at between 1/250 and 1/100 of a sec. I kept up with the off camera flash using a CTO gell and just adding a bit of fill. YOu can really see it in the shots of the bass player and the crowd shot (pretty much the entire crowd is lit by my flash). The accordion black and white shot is lit that way too, really a huge upgrade from the Gene Ween shots that I took there a few months back.

Also this past weekend got a chance to visit with a friend of Carla's and her new 2 week old daughter. Here's a couple of the shots I took. I actually set up an umbrella for some off camera lighting, I think it worked out well and the family seemed extremely pleased with them.

yeah the Yuki is a cutie for sure. He's definitely a wild little puppy though, even broke my mother's leg, after he took off on a walk and she slipped on the ice trying to stop him.

Just I went (the tickets were like $90)
She was wonderful. Sat on her stool the entire time, the place was packed to the gills with tables and people. She did a few songs I didn't recognize and did a cover of Janis Joplin's "Take a Little Piece of My Heart" that turned into a singalong. Of course the last song of the night she introduced as a beautiful song that people fall in love to and dance to at their weddings. Then she went on a bit of a tirade saying she's been signing it since she was 21 and she's been singing it for 50 years, so if that girl thinks she can steal it and sing it for that damn pointy eared president they've got another thing coming. And he can come and get her, if he doesn't like it, she's not afraid.
Yeah she's still pissed about that :funny1:
Then finally she started in to those famous words....At Last.....
So lets see, moving in a completely different direction, I had a chance to photograph former Guns N Roses bassist Duff McKagan last week at the Blender Theater in NYC. He put on a very nice show with his band Loaded, mostly did their own songs, but also threw in a "It's So Easy" and finished with a nice medley of Iggy and the Stooges, ZZ Top, ACDC, and the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses"..
btw have I mentioned how much I love the lighting at this venue, freaks me out that Live Nation is trying to sell it or close it.

Also got Mountain Jam coming up next weekend and can't wait for that!
A couple of things.
First Mountain Jam went very well this weekend, still trying to work through all the photos and get a few other (non-concert) things done. Until then there are some unprocessed ones up on Hidden Track, with comments by the lovely Ms Danca,

amazing pictures:joker:
So last weekend at Mountain Jam I got the news. When I had gotten my tickets for Phish at Jones Beach I had my editor at Hidden Track put in for either Thursday or Friday, well despite this being one of the hardest passes to get we received confirmation for both! Jones Beach at over 15,000 people is easily the largest venue I have ever shot at, so yeah I was a little nervous, but after two beers, a slightly heated "heady" burrito I headed over to the side entrance to await for our Livenation contact. (Interesting side note about Jones Beach, my first job in New York City was working for Jack L Gordon Architects. JLGA was the architect of record for the expansion of the 2nd level at the amphitheater and I used to see photos of it around the office when we would assemble projects and presentations)
So after a bit of chit-chat with the other photographers (including Dave Vann) we headed on in. First on all I was a bit unhappy to learn there was no photo pit at Jones Beach, simply the front of the isle which we were allowed to stand and shoot from. Secondly we were not allowed to take any shots of the crowd (due to legal restrictions) and of course we were limited to 3-songs (of course with Phish this would last anywhere from 15-45 minutes depending on their song choice)
Luckily however they started off with an acapella Grind allowing us a chance to shoot the guys standing all together as an intimate shot.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3591/3598540284_2da02de37f.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2455/3597703891_2f2a543630.jpg
.
another lucky break the contact for Livenation decided not to count this song against us, so we still had three more songs to go!
So then it was a series of working on a close up for each of the guys. For Page and Fishman, this meant getting a clear shot of their heads from 30' away and for Trey and Mike trying to get shots of them singing and jamming and hopefully capture a Trey "orgasm face" in the process.

.
well some things you get and some you miss, but you keep trying (I also need to look back and see if there's any other shots I can salvage)
But we got the signal it was time to go. Nicely enough it was time to pack our cameras and head out, but I was able to sneak a few from the crowd and got these two shots.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3639/3598540490_691c9fd030.jpg
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2341/3597734397_0d89c97359.jpg
The problem of course with long shots is you never know what you are going to get. Was the band in focus? Were they blown out? Did you get any crowd in that shot, or are they showing up completely black?
Friday night was more of the same, except we switched isles to Fishman's side and it was raining. Constantly raining, with over an inch of standing water in the front rows. Basically what this meant was every time you went to switch lenses they got wet and every time the lights shown on them they flared up. On top of that, I no longer had an angle on Fishman, as he was now directly behind the drum kit from my angle and now we were actually farther away from Page, with no better angle on him. So I decided to focus on the long group shots, doing my best to get the whole band and the lights in one shot.

and then it was time to hustle up to the upper levels before the sun completely set and grab a shot of the crowd in the venue.

thanks Josh, its definitely been a trip. Thinking back to the last time I saw Phish was at the top of the hill at Coventry as the sunset with a little pocket point and shoot and this time, five years later I'm right in front of the stage being 1 of 5? people asked to take photos of them... it was pretty cool....

JG you're truly an inspiration.

Well I've got a ton more to go, but I might have to take a break for a bit on them. Anywhere here are a few of the shots from Mountain Jam. Lots of great music, a little bit of rain, and a whole lot of cold at night.
We had been promised a photo pass, but in the grand tradition of festivals none was there. Thankfully Carla wasn't gonna take no for an answer and we finally got them.
I also had the opportunity to get a few autographs from Marco Benevento, the guys of Tea Leaf Green, George Porter and Brian Stoltz.
I got a great story from Trevor about one of the shots I had taken of him. George Porter asked me to autograph one of my photos for him and Brian Stoltz not only liked the shots I had taken of him, but asked for four of my business/baseball cards he loved them so much.

AWESOME stuff Jerm!
Love it!
So I've been pushing more into children's photography of late and had the opportunity to photograph a few of the children of one of Carla's cousins, this past weekend in Delaware.
.
Will and I talked Transformers the entire weekend and he loved to ham it up for the camera.

His brother Ben isn't quite at the age where he can talk in full sentences, but he figured out how to look through the photos on the back of my camera and giggled at all of the shots of him and his family.

thank you, I'm trying to work hard on it and I'm hoping with a little luck it might blossom into something special :)

.
So this past Thursday and Friday I got the chance to shoot Brothers Past, Lotus, and the Disco Biscuits in Atlantic City at the House of the Blues.
The music was fantastic, everyone had a great time, I had a chance to meet Barber and Brownie and chatted with Clay Parnell about trading Dead tapes back in the day
From a photography point of view, we didn't have pit access the first night due to a mis-communication with security, but luckily got it the second night in time for the Disco Biscuits. Lotus had some fantastic lighting, but unfortunately Brothers Past did not and I wasn't able to adjust my settings and flash to compensate.
Anyway enjoy :)

So back on page 2 of this thread, I posted a few shots of Chloe just a few weeks after she was born.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3573/3476108049_1e75d14d9f.jpg
Well this past week on the way up to New Hampshire for the 4th of July weekend, I had a second opportunity to stop in Connecticut for a few hours and photograph her again.

She was fun to work with. Got to see her happy, annoyed, sleeping, happy again, really a full range of emotions :)
.
btw if anyone is interested, I'm trying to push more into children's photography, so if you're in the NYC area (or nearby) perhaps we can work something out :)
in a few odds and ends, the Disco Biscuits and Lotus both asked to use my shots in conjunction with their livedownload series

haha all my girlfriends are going crazy over the pics of chloe! there is now an email fight over who gets to hold her first this weekend!
Alright just finished up a good amount of shots from Camp Bisco.
.
We definitely had a good time and heard a ton of good music. I think however the mud got us down a bit and I definitely got worn out by the end. Just wrote this on the main board but I'd have to say a personal highlight was talking to Dr. Dog and K'naan. Carla struck up a conversation with one of the guys from Dr. Dog as we were waiting at the gates, apparently they were having problems getting clearance to bring their dog in
Then later after the Dr. Dog set, K'naan came over to talk to them and give them a few cds and I was able to get them to pose for a shot.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3516/3742291953_fccdd1b6ea.jpg
.
K'naan is from Somalia and raps about it in a few of his songs. I have a friend who was involved with the U.S. Forces sent there to try and deal with the warlords so I asked K'naan for his view on it and we talked for a little bit about it...

hopefully I'll get a few more done when I get a break after Vibes. :)
Lets see so I got my first photo pass for the vibes this year and took over 1200 shots and will probably be going through these for quite awhile. Festivals can be a bit exhausting as you spend most of your time on the go trying to run from stage to stage and catch the first three songs of each act, while keeping an eye out for good crowd shots and bikini hula hooping girls ;)
Anyways it was a lot of fun and I got to see a lot of good music close up, including Crosby, Stills, and Nash, that I never would have otherwise. Hope you enjoy the shots.

Great band shots Jeremy, very professional. I'd love to see oogles more of the crowd from your perspective. I'm always more interested in crowd shots, seeing the people and what they are up to, dancing, mudding, glowsticking, smiling, smiling, smiling, and so on.
Maybe you'd like turn your mad photog skills around and capture the crowd, the energy more often in the future, as well as the bands.

actually this year at Vibes, I easily took more individual shots of attendees than I had at Camp Bisco or Mountain Jam. But you're right I need more of the screaming crowd shots from the first row. Sometimes its a bit tough, when you're limited to shooting three songs in the pit.
.
anyway thanks for looking :)
Some shots from Phish at Hartford.
The rules have been changed a little for shooting Phish, before it was three songs, now its three songs or 15 minutes, so it makes it all tighter. On the other hand, Hartford had a generous pit and the band was much closer than at Jones Beach which was great. We also had seats about 15th row center, which helped for getting a few shots from the crowd. Again we were told not to take any shots of concertgoers which was a bit of a bummer and my framing and focusing was off on a ton of shots (I may have taken around 500 total), but still all and all I'm generally happy with how these came out.

and our last softball game of the year :(
We tied the series up with a 4-3 earlier in the day. Then going into the last inning with a 3-1 lead, the defense fell apart, along with a few big hits, and a reversed call by the umpire, we lost 4-3 on the Great Lawn at Central Park

Lets see saw a couple of shows the past few days.
First off, I got to see Buzzuniverse at Brooklyn Bowl for the first time. A lovely place and a pretty cool venue. Its basically one large room divided in half with bowling on one side and a music venue on the other with large screens all around. Also everything is finished in rough dark wood and the couches are all black (p)leather giving it a very nice feel.

I also had the opportunity to see the Chris Berry Trio w/ Kimock and Kang at Mexicali on Saturday night. Nice size crowd and really nice music moving from African/Caribbean to a bit of techno (from another Kang project, Panjea?)

After the show I was able to get a photograph signed by Steve Kimock, from a show he played with Mickey Hart at Irving Plaza last year.
I also gave him a copy of this shot
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3175/2674103207_8813c3f265.jpg
which he loved.
The funny thing is I just posted it to facebook and George Porter is loving it, too!

Also looks like I'll be shooting at Mercury Lounge on Saturday to see Lotus so that should be lots of fun and lastly if anyone is interested, I've entered a couple of my photos in a contest with Billboard Magazine and I'd be grateful if anyone could spare a moment and vote for one of my shots.

Lotus kicked off their latest tour at the Mercury Lounge this past weekend. We went on Saturday night to the sold out venue and had a great time, even if we did have to take a break by the bar and cool off once or twice.
I stayed with the prime lenses for most of the evening but was able to go to the Tokina 11-16 2.8 once or twice, including the first shot below, the band had some great strobes going, too and that really helped to make the shot.

but that one is a bit more expensive and you're pretty much stuck with the same shot again and again, not that it can't be spectacular, but with either lens you have to get really, really close up, otherwise you're subject is going to be super tiny.
The other thing is, its a 2.8 lens, so places like say Mexicali, or Sullivan Hall, or Mercury Lounge, which have a ncie tight stage that you can get right up on top of, don't always have the brightest lights and when they do, they use them more as accents and you've got to be lucky, so I'll bring the Tokina, but it does sit in the bag a ton.
But that's almost exactly what happened on Saturday night :)
So a couple of shots from Phoenix and Passion Pit from Central Park.

both sets were excellent and I just found out Passion Pit is about to do the Letterman Show. Shooting Phoenix was a bit tough however, three songs and the first one was entirely back lit, plus the guys on stage were highly animated which was great to watch, but hard to focus on.

I had an interesting time last last Wednesday. Started off at at a Relix party to celebrate the release of their October issue. Free PBR Tallboys and an acoustic set by Charlie Mars and attended by his girlfriend Mary-Louise Parker whom I must have walked by half a dozen times and only noticed her little daughter and not her
From there I ran over to Brooklyn Bowl to catch the Govt. Mule cd release party. The place was maybe 3/4 full so there was plenty of places to move around and get some good shots. Plus the lights were really bright for most of the show and so I was able to switch back and forth from the primes to the zooms.

Looks like I'm gonna focus on studying for my LEEDS Exam (Green Architecture) the next two weeks. So probably not much shooting for a little bit.
So back to Brooklyn Bowl on Sunday for the Disco Biscuits
.
The show started a bit later than we hoped for, plus there was a "rumor" the 600 person venue had sold around 800 tickets, due to a mistake, so the place was packed to the gills. Definitely a solid first set, but I think more than a few people ran out of gas by the end of the night. Shooting wise, probably not my best effort, but here goes.

In the funny things department. The owner of Brooklyn Bowl, Peter Shapiro was standing next to me at one point yelling at Marc Brownstein for his attention. Marc, then walked over and mugged for his camera and I took one, too. Long story short, I send it to my friend, who sends it to Pete, who sends it to Brownie and now its his avatar on facebook.

(you can see Pete's arm in the bottom left)
So Saturday night was a wee bit busy in NYC. I was asked at the last minute to help out a reviewer with a shoot from RRE and YMSB at the Nokia in Times Square. But of course the list is closed and so I had to be put on as a +1, which would have been fine, but the reviewer was late getting there and of course, there was no +1 errrr. So I snagged a few shots from the crowd of RRE, walked around and talekd to a few people and then waited for YMSB. Luckily the lighting was great for them and there was only 2 other people in the pit, making it easy to move around. These are all shot at 1600iso and 1/250 2.8. In retrospect, I probably could have undershot them a bit more and gotten more detail but oh well.

So on Wednesday I had the opportunity to shoot Blues Traveler at Irving Plaza. Honestly it was my first time seeing them since they opened for the Rolling Stones on the Bridges to Babylon Tour. Decent show and a nice crowd (especially considering Game 6 of the World Series going on)
For highlights they played Sublime's, "What I've Got", Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me" and their own Hook, The Mountains Win Again, But Anyway, and of course Run-Around.
The lighting on the band was excellent, although there was always more on John Popper, so I had to adjust while shooting during the concert and in photoshop later on. Probably the highlight for me, was having a photo pit at Irving Plaza for the first time and we got 6 songs before I got the boot! Oh my god, it was fantastic, now if only the Bowery does one two, I'll be in Heaven.
Settings ranged from 1/250 up to 1/400 of a second with an ISO between 1000-1600.

btw has anyone ever heard of Falu? She sat in with the band as well. She's an traditional Indian singer, I've never heard of her, but she's got photos on her myspace page with DJ Logic, George Porter, Bernie Worrell, Adam Deitch, and Widespread Panic.
So she's obviously on the edge of the scene...

Don't think we'll be down in the city any time soon with Evan, but if you are ever up this way (Albany) and want to swing by and take some pictures of him... I would love that.

.
So I got the opportunity to shoot the Monsters of Folk on Sunday at the Beacon Theatre. It was my first time shooting there and I didn't quite know what to expect. Well I get there and am told that we are only allowed to stand against the far walls and shoot from there
Luckily this gets amended to being allowed to shoot at the front of the rows, but to kneel only (so as to not to block anyone's view) Three songs only (so maybe 9 minutes total), its mostly dark, and as anyone knows at the Beacon, the band sets up pretty far back on the stage.
So definitely not the easiest shoot, seems like everyone had a tough shoot at the Beacon and United Palace Theatre (on Friday night)

then I was able to move up to the 2nd row of the Lodge (bought these tickets) and shoot the rest of the night from up there and get these three images.

.
also I am heading out to Las Vegas with Carla for the next few days. I'm hoping to get some great shots of either the parks surrounding Las Vegas or maybe a nearby ghost town....
So we went to Las Vegas last week and had a lovely time and for these we had a beautiful day to shoot.
Its become a bit of a tradition with myself and my sister to meet up around Thanksgiving or so and spend the day
walking and talking and shooting....
.
Here's a couple of shots we took out in the desert of Eldorado Canyon at the old Techatticup Mining Camp
We ended up getting pretty lucky on the weather, we drove through a dust storm on the way out there, but it cleared up
and we got a real nice desert sky to work with.
These are one shot HDRs, they come out pretty decently as long as you keep the ISO low (200 or 250) and don't shoot directly into the sun.

Ok so we went to Grace Potter at Terminal 5 on Friday night and had an excellent time. The place was full, but not too packed, so although the sightlines were terrible, I was able to move around and get a few good angles.

The first song for Grace, was lit well, then the next one, not so much and for the last one she went to the organ, which is always a tough place to find an angle.
these were mostly at 1/250 (sometimes I was able to go a bit faster) 2.8 ISO 1600

Lets see,I just finished up some shots of Lotus at Terminal 5 from this past Saturday.
Excellent show with about 1,800 in attendance and a very nice Spiritualize > It's All Clear > Space Oddity > It's All Clear > Spiritualize in the middle of the show.
.
Settings here for the most part are 1600iso, 1/250, & 2.8
The lighting was ok, unfortunately I was getting a ton of flare in my shots and missed some nice angles...

Ha yeah I watched them grow from 5 of us at the Brass Lantern to 15000 at Rothbury. Unreal. You are right that they seem to be one of the only jamtronica/jambands that seem to be growing. Nicest guys on the scene taboot

JG, I am floored! WOW! :clapping:
So I had the opportunity to take a few shots of U-Melt last Friday. As most people knew in attendance, it would be Rob's last show for a while. So I got a chance to get there during soundcheck to take a few extra shots and hopefully get something good. I think the first one was exactly what I was hoping for.

I'd always hoped to do another project with you but there didn't seem to be any opportunity after that (plus you moved away/off the boards) If you ever have time, there's a place near by house in Jersey City, its this huge stone wall with beautiful light and texture that I've been dying to try out.

great shots
:clapping: I have to give you mad props for your pictures, you really have a talent. After looking through your pictures i was wondering how do you get such vibrant coloring?
Thanks guys. :)
A friend of mine told me a funny story about Marco when he went to interview him at his house in Brooklyn, said he's a really fun guy to interview.
.
Joe as for the colors it depends on the shot. If its a concert photo it was probably enhanced in photoshop and if it was a day shot it may have been done as an HDR.
I just really enjoy seeing vibrant colors.
As a bit of a finale before Christmas (and possibly until NYE), I wanted to get together my favorite concert photos of the year and put them altogether in a group.
These were taken at Mountain Jam, Camp Bisco, Gathering of the Vibes, at various places around the city and in New Jersey in Atlantic City and Vasa Park, and Mexicali Blues. There's some pretty big names in there including Bob Weir, Lou Reed, Phish, Etta James, Maceo Parker, GE Smith, and Buddy Guy as well as some up and coming bands like Lucero, the Discuo Biscuits, Lotus, and more.
Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays :)

Its been a pretty quiet week or two since NYE, luckily that will pick up with Vampire Weekend next Monday and Tuesday
and possibly Ryan Montbleau on Saturday at Mexicali.
So I've been trying to get back to work on portraits, sorta my New Year's resolution. Basically trying to find photos that I like and trying to figure out the lighting styles and recreate them. In a lot of ways its the complete opposite of concert photography. You control the lights, the mood, and must somehow draw out the subject's personality in a flattering manner...
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4006/4271880098_cc0c081614.jpg
This is a three light set up with a shoot through umbrella to the right, wrapping the face. A second edge light over my back shoulder to separate the black of the jacket from background, and a final light placed behind my back shooting at the background.
Unfortunately I don't have any other models right now, so its gonna be me for quite a while on this one. Although if anyone is ever bored one afternoon in Jersey City, give me a call ;)
.
Also the Disco Biscuits announced their 2010 winter tour and used my image for advertisement.
(Aron Magner looked through all the shots and chose it personally)

Some more odds and ends.
I had a chance to catch Bebe Buell at the Hiro Ballroom last Wednesday night. For those who don't know Bebe Buell is the mother of Liv Tyler, a Playmate centerfold,
a former lover of Todd Rundgren, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Jimmy Page, and Steven Tyler and is one of the main inspirations for the character, Penny Lane. She just released a new album and used the evening as a industry event to test it out.
Our friend Zac Lasher plays keyboards in the band which also includes Bebe's most recent (youngish) husband.

3. SB-600 behind subject illuminating the background with red filter.

I should have the Vampire Weekend photos up soon. The shows were lots of fun, super packed though, but I think I got some nice ones.
They played all their hits from the first album and a good amount off their second one as well. I've never seen the floor bounce like it did at the Webster
during a few of the songs, the crowd was really into it. Then at the Bowery it was announced that their second album had hit #1 on the Billboard charts
as well. Carla's got a friend who works for their record label and they're renting out a bar to celebrate it, can't wait!

Ok moe. from Friday night. Lots of sit ins with Butch Trucks, Marco Benevento, Jeff Austin, David Sanborn, and Danny Barnes.
I had a little problem getting into the venue and had to do almost a straight run into the pit. The backlighting was excellent, the front lighting in
most cases was non-existent, which was a bit of a bummer. Luckily though there was no time restrictions in the pit and we could pretty much go
wherever we liked in the venue.

aw, Vampire Weekend! i knew the frontman, Ezra, when I was in HS :) so weird to see them blowing up...
wow Randy, that's pretty cool.
Lets see I got a chance to catch Tea Leaf Green and Galactic's show at Terminal 5 this past Friday night. Galactic put on an excellent show, while Tea Leaf Green couldn't quite seem to put it together in their short time slot.
As far as photographing, it was damn tough. For TLG Apparently their long time lighting guru has moved on and they're only using the house guys on this run. Their were more than a few missed lighting cues and multiple solos that were done in complete darkness during the show. Its like Rock and Roll 101, if your lead guitarist goes into a solo, turn a freakin' spot light on him, hell turn any light on him!
For Galactic's first two songs of the night, they decided to go minimalist and not turn the lights on either, leaving approximately 5 minutes to get any shots I could....

and personally requesting the following image for their website.

I was also asked to work up a u-melt publicity photo, including newest member Kevin Griffin. Of course at this point I haven’t had the time
to shoot Kevin with the band, so I modified an old idea that had been kicking around, found a shot of Kevin playing with The Point and came up with this.

Unfortunately I haven't shot too much lately, mostly I've been trying to practice for a shoot with the U-Melt guys on Saturday before their big gig.

In this one of the Brooklyn Bridge, I thought it'd be fun to shoot in the snow and rain, of course I learned
you've got to bring an umbrella with you to cover the camera or your lens is screwed. This is me trying to

What a gift you have JG. :)
Those are Great! I esp the love the second one of Carla and the Winter shots.
Thanks Kris, its a lot of work and most of the time its a lot of fun, although sometimes it can be a bit frustrating, too :)
Luna, its fun to walk around the neighborhood and check out the different views of Manhattan. There's still a few more places I've got to
do, like shoot from the heights or the park in Hoboken.

that's awesome!
So after being turned down by Umphrey's and Furthur this past week I was a bit disappointed and down, but a funny thing happened.
I ended up getting a random email from a blog asking if anyone wanted to review Tibet House US XX Annual Benefit. I emailed
back and said, I wasn't interested in reviewing it, but would love a chance to shoot Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Philip Glass, and Gogol Bordello
at Carnegie Hall. The show was a ton of fun. Someone yelled a "Belated" Happy Birthday to Patti Smith, to which she responded, "As the Mad Hatter
said, well today is my Un-Birthday." Iggy Pop started in a sweater, but quickly went running around the stage topless. He even tried
what was possibly the first stage dive ever at Carnegie Hall (and possibly the last) as he ended up in a heap at the bottom floor, before being picked
up by the crowd and dusted off.
For shooting it was a bit tough however. We were only allowed to shoot from the back of the auditorium and the lighting was minimal to say the least, although we
were allowed to shoot the entire show from there which did allow for different testing. I ended up renting a 300 2.8 lens (and a monopod) and at one point put a converter on it that got me a fixed lens of 500mm, which is pretty freakin' crazy.
I finally started pushing the ISO of the camera by setting the exposure from 1600-3200 depending on the musicians.

Josh, I was hoping to make it out on Sunday for Railroad Earth, but I let excuses get in the way :undecided:

Here's the shot that was chosen for U-Melt's new promo photo. We set it up during sound check and then
took it in one of the booths at the Bowery Ballroom right before the doors opened. With limited time we decided to have all the lights
ready to go and get the band in some quick makeup and just start shooting. I think the setup portion took about an hour and the actual
shoot around 15 minutes.

Had a chance to see Soulive on Friday night at Brooklyn Bowl. The venue was packed but people were eating and drinking and bowling, so you could still move around the concert floor pretty well. The special guests for the evening were The London Souls and Nigel Hall. Soulive did some Beatles covers during their set and had the other bands sit in on Hendrix's Manic Depression, Tears for Fears, and James Brown. Really good stuff.

Lets see a few more from Bowlive, this time from Wednesday night with Oteil and Kofi. There were rumors that Warren, Derek Trucks, and Susan
were scheduled to show, but it appears that the Allmans practice ran long and even Oteil barely made it to the venue for the second set.

so I'll let people know more when its finalized.
Tonight I'll be at Keller Williams at the Highline and Saturday evening with all the boardie bands at Mexicali
Keller Williams put on his usual excellent show on Friday night at the Highline. He played his hit songs, Freeker by the Speeker, Novelty Song, and Gate Crashers Suck into Scarlet Begonias. Plus I got to hang out with J-Me & his brother, Rob and Ann, Erin, Jordan, and a few others :)
Shooting the show however was a bit tough as the lights were generally dark so I shot mostly with the primes and pumped the ISO up pretty far.

and I've got U-Melt coming up on Friday and I just got confirmed for the Disco Biscuits next Saturday night in Montclair, NJ. Should be good times...
So yesterday was a bit of an up and down day. I found out that the huge job I was 100% sure I had, I did not and was merely in a group of people waiting to hear back from the sponsors. Huge bummer and huge miscommunication that was handled about as unprofessionally as anything I've seen....
So that being said its time to move on to the next thing and this past weekend it was the Disco Biscuits at the Wellmont Theatre. I was pretty excited to get shots of all the guys on stage and hear the sound of the Mega-Biscuits together. Barber got to play some extended songs in both sets and the crowd really came alive when he stepped out and strapped the guitar on for the first time during the show. On top of that, the lighting for the band is really top notch and the venue itself was fantastic. Lots of different levels and vantage points to shoot from and even some great seating up top to rest your feet in for a bit.

So last Saturday night I had the opportunity to photograph Deer Tick and Dr. Dog at the sold out Terminal 5.
The show opened with the members of Deer Tick wearing dresses and ended with a marriage proposal during Dr. Dog's set and had
some pretty good music inbetween.
It was a pretty tough shoot overall, three songs for each and being that they're both indie bands, the songs were short ones.
Also the lighting tended to be mostly red and blacklit for Deer Tick, while it was all over the place for Dr. Dog, with a ton of strobe action.

I wanted to post a few odds and ends before the weekend.
.
First Jambands.com ran an article on The New Deal and their summer plans, using one of my shots of Jamie Shields from Music Hall of Williamsburg.
Hopefully I'll get a chance to catch them a couple times this summer including Camp Bisco :)

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4051/4627300434_3cefd76f28.jpg
.
Also did a quick studio shoot with Carla the other day. Hopefully she'll be able to use them on her food blog
http://carlastastytreats.blogspot.com/
These were shot with a shoot through umbrella, left of the camera, with a hair light at camera right.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4052/4625183955_715f0fcbb5.jpg
.
I also came up with a new publicity piece for this summer. Its an assortment of shots taken at Camp Bisco, Mountain Jam, moe.down,
Gathering of the Vibes, and more from the past three years. It focuses on who I consider to be the top guitarists in the jam music scene,
(whom I've had the great pleasure to photograph) Hope you like it :)

.
.
This weekend I'll be shooting the Marco Benevento Trio at Bowery Ballroom with a ton of access, so hopefully I'll get some great shots :)
I got the opportunity to check out the Marco Benevento Trio on Saturday night. Unfortunately the All Access pass never materialized, due to the
fact that it was his wife's birthday and the entire (Italian) family was in attendance
The lighting was fairly decent for this show and I was able to switch back and forth between the prime lenses (1.8) and the (2.8) zooms and stay
mainly in the 1/200-1/160 sec range at 1600 ISO, although after carrying that much gear, by the end of the night my back was really killing me.
Reed Mathis is the bassist on this tour, but Marc Friedman came to the show as well (with a +3 lol) and sat in on the last song :)

LOVE the shot of Carla and the asparagus.
Really like the collage. I personally wouldn't have made Weir's pic that big (mainly because I don't think him that good a guitarist). I might have gone with Warren or Trey for that spot, but, that's subjective. I really like the overall look and feel of it.
As always, your work gets better and better with every pic I see jg.

Yeah I wouldn't disagree about Weir being ranked behind Warren or Trey (or Trucks) but I figured this would be more about importance in the music scene, with the Dead as the lead and everything that's flowed out of it. I'm hoping at some point this summer to get a shot at Furthur and a photo of Phil Lesh and do a companion piece for bassists...

Great asparagus shot
Great asparagus shot
Thanks, we had a lot of fun goofing around and doing it :)
I wanted to throw some odds and ends up there, while I'm still hustling to finish up the shots from The Mighty High Mountain Festival.
.
First, Carla wrote up a great article on items to bring while camping at a festival
http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/festival-survival-guide-pt-1-be-prepared/
and we used a couple of old images, including one of Again and Again's Birks drying in the sun at Gathering of the Vibes.
http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/of50567443-400x312.jpg
.
We also used a favorite image I took a few years back at Summer Camp during the Tea Leaf Green set.
http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/519409205_7f2b609aaf_b1-400x266.jpg
.
Also Hidden Track ran an article on Deer Tick and ran one of my recent photos from their Terminal 5 show.

http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/tour-dates-deer-tick-time/
.
There was also an article on Wade “Wyllys” Wilby with a download of one of his latest mixes, with an image I recently took at Wellmont Theatre

.
Carla also wrote up an article of all the Memorial Day festivals that happened last weekend.
http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/preview-memorial-day-weekend-festivals/
.
We got to use a few of my images taken last summer at GOTV and a moe. show out in Jersey and a few images from Britt Nemeth as well!

.
Also I had a chance last week to hang out in my old neighborhood of Long Island City and do a shoot with my buddy Rahj. Definitely got some work in with the off camera flash and he's a pretty expressive guy, so it was a lot of fun. I'm pretty excited about the first one :)

and finally having a bit of luck turn my way, I started working for photographer Elizabeth Waugh this past Tuesday.
http://www.elizabethwaughphotography.com/
at this point I'll mostly be assisting in the studio and on set, but I'm really hoping to learn a ton about studio shoots and the business in general.
Plus I'm scheduled for my first call time this Friday and its a men's fashion shoot that includes two huge birds! :Phishfolk:

So on to the Might High Mountain Festival. It was a three day festival, located about an hour away from our house on a lovely little ski mountain
in Tuxedo, NY. We saw some great musicians including, From Good Homes, Dark Star Orchestra, and Peter Rowan. On top of that we got to
hang out with a ton of our friends and even had Todd Sheaffer park by our campsite for the day :)

For lighting the first day was a little overcast which was great, especially towards sundown
as the stage lighting added some great rear highlights. It was a little tougher shooting on Sunday with
some really strong direct sunlight, basically forcing the exposures to turn the background of the stage completely black.
For the evening the lighting was really well done and the crowd was easy to move around with.
.
I even got jambands.com to run the following shot with a writeup on the event as well :)

I got a chance to see Jackie Greene and his band at the City Winery down in Tribeca on Tuesday night.
It was my first time there and the place is set up like a dinner theater place or like BB Kings when it has a seated floor.
Luckily it was easier to get around than a packed show at BB Kings and the lighting ended up better than I expected.
Jackie was doing a cd release/WFUV live radio show, so there was a set, then an interview and then another set.
He did a bunch of new songs and some old ones, but I think everyone's favorite was his acoustic encore of Brokedown Palace
to end the evening.

Lets do an odds and ends post.
Jambands.com ran a few photos for their "In The Moment" series.

.
They've been a little slow in updating them recently so there's a photo of Kofi Burbridge from the Bowlive shows in March

.
Jambands.com also ran an article on Grace Potter and the Nocturnal's new album that was just released and is using a couple of rotating photos
for that as well

and Carla wrote another great feature on preparing for bad/hot weather at a festival called

Next up I should have the finished shots from Tuesday's show of the John Butler Trio and State Radio at Summerstage in Central Park :)
So a few shots from John Butler Trio and State Radio at Summerstage.
Unfortunately I didn't realize that State Radio went on at 6:30 that night, so as I'm hustling into the park, of course the band is on
and I missed my spot in the pit :bang: So feeling stupid, I wandered around and got a few long shots of the band from the crowd.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4067/4711578747_3de1da4463.jpg
.
Then after the opening set I wandered around backstage and noticed the lead singer from State Radio and Pete Francis (former bandmates) talking
so I tried to get them to pose for a photo, but they were having none of it, so as I turned to walk away, I noticed John Butler and his band readying to
take the stage and took this one :)
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4064/4708611847_d6a5994f58.jpg
.
Here's a few more from the stage. We had three songs and the daylighting was excellent for the first two, although it went down considerably after that.
I also got a few shots in later in the show at sidestage when John Butler's wife, Danielle Caruana sat in for a few songs.

I've been super busy lately (mostly interning for a photographer in Bushwick)
but I wanted to post two engagement shots from the weekend of Carla's sister on the lake in New Hampshire.
We used an off camera flash with a shoot through umbrella and we had been trying to convince them all weekend to pose for
a photo. Finally on the 4th of July with the sunset looking beautiful they went for it and we scrambled and got a few good shots.

Alright so I wanted to post some photos from Akron/Family from last week at Le Poisson Rouge.
It was my first time seeing them and going to Le Poisson Rouge and they did not disappoint.
They are currently a three piece band that filled out their sound with 12 other musicians, mostly from the opening bands.
Most of the songs I would say were good but not particularly memorable, but holy cow they did a 20 minute song that had the place jumping, with crowd members ripping off their shirts and people jumping up on the stage and just generally going nuts. For anyone who likes live music/jam music it was probably the most exciting thing I'd seen in a long while.
The lighting for the show was a bit tough and there was no photo pit, but I think I did a decent job using mostly the primes and just simply taking a ton of shots.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/gordonimages/sets/72157624439223382/show/
I'll post the slide show for now and edit it later. This weekend we've got a very special boardie birthday :) and possibly a late night show and then next week its off to Camp Bisco!
So I had the opportunity to photograph God Street Wine's reunion show on Saturday. I always enjoy shooting at the
Gramercy Theatre with the great lighting, sloped floor, and stadium seating. Even for a completely sold out show such
as this one there were angles to shoot from (and some air conditioning  ) We got 3 1/2 songs in the pit and then the boot,
Funny thing however is that most of the "jamband" photographers were there, from Dino Perrucci, to Mike Wrenn, to Dave Vann, and
even a few more, seemed like everyone was there, which made me wonder who was at All Good
I mostly kept the aperture at 2.8 and the shutter speed at 1/250, and the ISO at 1250. Probably ran it a bit too hot, but the dynamic lighting
was a bit tough, better than no lighting at all though :)

The review from the weekend is already up on Hidden Track with a few of the shots :)
http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/review-god-street-wine-the-gramercy/
So we went to Camp Bisco 9 last week and had a fantastic time. We got to meet and camp with a ton of musicans, had a long conversation with Mike Greenhaus, and even photographed the CiD VIP signing with the Disco Biscuits. From a musical perspective I got to be just a few feet away from Method Man, as he jumped off the stage to be closer to the fans and to photograph Major Lazer as they danced and gyrated on top of each other was a sight to see. As always the photo pit was tight with people and the main stage was impossibly high, but I still got a few good ones off.
There’s a shot with Girl Talk, that I worked really hard to get in the Tent Stage, by the time I got to the tent, security wasn't going to let us anywhere in front of the stage, so I talked to another photographer who had just been at the back of the stage and walked up there myself. Got to the top of the steps and one of the stagehands apologized and moved out of my way. So I figured I'd ask the other one if I could move closer and he said sure, as long as you don't bother the dancers, got a couple of shots off and moved off. Wouldn't you know it though, a couple of minutes later Girl Talk jumps up on his stage and I'm not close enough to nail it... oh well.

Jeremy...these shots are wonderful. Keep em comin' :clapping:
thank you :)
I wanted to throw some quick ones up of last night's Flaming Lips show in Central Park.
Pretty crazy in the pit as the ramp for the "Hamster Ball" divided the photo pit in half and as Wayne ran around the stage,
photographers ended up scrambling for shots, while confetti fell and the crowd went wild.
Luckily I got a shot of Wayne watching the opening band, that I really liked.

So, what's your point?
Thanks Sarah and Bethany :)

So this past weekend, Carla and I went to Pet Zoo in New Jersey. A beautiful backyard festival with The Heavy Pets, U-Melt, Toubab Krewe, The Brew, and more.
The great thing about small festivals is that everything is such a short walk, friends are easy to find, and you can hear the music from your campsite.
The lights were great for this one, I had heard the guy who does the lighting for Furthur set it up (can't confirm that though). I also spent a good deal of time trying
to photograph the hula hoopers and the fire spinners and finally got it right by the end. The cool thing with the hula hoopers, is the exposure is around 1/15 of a second and is crystal clear :)

Also this past weekend I got an email from Brady Rymer of From Good Homes, asking me if he could hire me to shoot his side project The Little Band That Could on Sunday. I had a great time at the Prospect Park Bandshell and on top of being the easiest shoot I have ever done, it was a kids show. So I'll have those shots up shortly when they're finished :)
.
Also I'll be shooting at Lotus tonight at Roseland Ballroom, should be a good time.

I'll have some shots up Lotus and STS9 up in the next couple of days.
Also The Waster ran a review of The Flaming Lips show in the Central Park from a few weeks back, check it out

In the odds and ends department.
Hidden Track ran a review of the P-Groove show at the Bowery Ballroom, using a few of the shots seen above.
http://www.glidemagazine.com/hiddentrack/review-perpetual-groove-the-bowery/
Also I reworked this old baseball photo of Marc Brownstein for Hidden Track's baseball preview.
Hopefully they'll get that interview up soon.

jambands.com ran this shot of Jon Gutwillig, following the news of his broken arm after the Disco Biscuit show in Albany.

Also I got my first photo in the latest issue of Relix (with the check being in the mail!) They ran a story on the Tea Leaf Green/Galactic show at Terminal 5 with
the following photo of Reed Mathis.

.
and I also did a quick write up on Hidden Track about the new HBO Treme. It focuses on musicians in New Orleans in the weeks following
Hurricane Katrina and is written by David Simon, the writer of The Wire.

and that's about it for this week, but on April 10th I have been invited to photograph The Brew up in New Hampshire, for stills to accompany a DVD
they will be filming that night at the Portsmouth Music Hall. I'm pretty excited about that one :)
Great photos as usual....glad ya covered Treme.....I really hope it comes back. Such a great show!
