Uncle Coulro I believe is the only person I know that has homeschooled.

My son, he is slipping. He has always been slipping. But now he's causing problems. I"ve always known in my heart that he would thrive with one on one. I mean, I realize any child may thrive one on one. But he is going to bomb otherwise.

Help!! WHere do I start? How do I start?

before you go to homeschooling (and not really knowing your entire problem so this might be totally off-base) is it possible that a private tutor might help? seems like you son needs some one on one attention to help him understand why he is learning what he is and understand the importance of it? and keep him on task with his lessons......

I did private tutoring (via kaplan...I would ask his teacher for suggestion though as they might know someone in the area that is more familiar with his/her lesson plan etc) for lots of kids who had similar issues.... couldn't sit still through a 1 hour lesson even - but we came up with things that worked for them and once they saw that they could do well and weren't "stupid" it motivated them to try even more

also private tutors would be able to customize lesson plans and make more activities to help reinforce lessons etc

carla, wende's son issue is school in general i do believe, the entire sit in your seat thing has become an issue(from my understanding)

if you're really into doing this on your own look up your states standards and the natinal standards. There are tons of websites and stuff that will give you curricilum.

every school district should have alternate schools that are FREE to students in district (taxes pay for them) perhaps you can inquire with them?

sorry this is rushed, i'm actually off to tutor the girl up the block.

wende feel free to pm if you're itnersted

passes all his tests but is failing because of his homework and his organizational skills. He's distracted and has no idea whats going on. Although, he knows the material. It's weird. It sucks. It's the same old same old, year after year after year after year.

sounds like my minion

my mom and i discussed her home schooling once for summer school but the district would not give her (a regents science teacher) the curriculum for 9th grade social studies summer school) to prepare for the exam. "it had not been done before".

here is from the new york state department of education web site:

Sums homeschooled a little.

bear in mind, we all "homeschool" our children from birth. We teach them how to talk, we (should) teach them colors and shapes and basic abc's... we teach them right from wrong, etc...

I've got a friend whose teenage son recently transferred to the local Waldorf school, down here. His son really likes it. He's 13.

haha. I do NOT have 11 thousand dollars a year for this school. :(

I have met with them before and to be honest with you, they are just freaking weird.

We get some of the Waldorf kids at the shcool where my other kids go, and they don't last a quarter. ONe girl came to school in 4th grade, she didn't know how to read or write. It was weird. Poor girl.

Also, if you want to do some research, your local library might have some good, up to date books to help you get started. If your local library doesn't have any good ones, they can be inter-library loaned from another library. The library where I used to work had some excellent ones.

Interesting, and thank you for the feedback. The others I talked with only had gushing things to say. I've wondered.......seems like a viable concept and an interesting place to teach.

All best in finding a feasible education solution.

Special ed teachers are trained in modifying curriculum, teaching organizational skills, etc. Maybe a sped teacher as a private tutor? Many teachers tutor on the side
