the workers are making 0.27% per hour of what the CEO does. it's legal but doesn't make it moral or right.

only way to beat this is to organize, bring back unions and break the back of the greedy corporations and shareholders!

What a bunch of self-entitled whiners!

No one is forced to work at Burger King......or anywhere else. Don't like their pay structure? Go somewhere else. Or start up your own street vendor burger cart.

You are entitled to the PURSUIT of happiness........

I agree with Fish. So many people think they are entitled to a house, free health care, a job, the list goes on. No where is it stated that its the govt's job to supply these things.

How many houses does John McCain need?

There's a serious imbalance when one man can't count how many houses they own, and another can't afford one.

What does john McCain have to do with this?

there are many Dems who have multiple houses also.

I don't care if it is class envy. It's not fair. Unions protect the worker and ensure fair pay and conditions.

I think you're envious of people who make a better living than you but work less.

What are you lacking in life that a couple extra dollars worth of tax cuts will fix?

exposing the violation of labor laws makes you a whiner?

to work a full time job and still live below the poverty level? all the while higher ups who own burger king will get over $200,000. in bonuses (tax payer funded bonuses)

srsly, fish.

because some participate in their own exploitation (due to their limited employment options), makes the exploitation no less repugnant.

If there is a violation labor laws, fine. But that isn't what this thread is about. It's about low wages at a fast food resturant.

What kind of loser reaches the peak of their career working the counter at Burger King? It is the lowest of the low entry level jobs. It isn't MEANT to support you in a middle class standard of living.

there is mention of labor law violations in the video

side note: but their labor is meant to support the uberwealthy and their standard of living, right?

not everyone can make it past the fast food entry-level job and some folks, especially in the current economy, may find themselves with nowhere to work but fast food. they should still be paid decently for their labor. at 6.83/hr your options and access to goods are limited. unions give people a chance to rise above that and have a voice within the corporation.

zenLoki, the whole objective of conservatives since Ronald Reagan has been to get rid of unions and let the price of labor hit rock bottom. We'd be no better than China over here if they had their way. I'm sure you know that. It's good to see another union brother.

damn straight peaceFrog!!!

every company is scared to let the unions in and this should tell everyone a lot. i know of 4 walmarters that were fired just for mentioning it at work.

If we are not careful, in ten years 65% of the jobs in this country will be "enrty level, not suppose to support you in a middle class standard of living."

that's a great point Pete. i don't know what the stats are on that but it seems we've been heading in that direction for a while.

They already found ways around this. Simply move the jobs overseas. It happened

I've noticed that the seagulls love to hang in the Burger King parking lot and eat from the trash cans and dumpsters. There is a Wendy next store and a McDonald across the street. Strange thing when you throw BK food over the fence into the Wendy parking lot, the seagulls will fly over there to get it. Just an observation..

How are you going to move the construction or foodservice industry overseas?

I can't imagine waiting for my Whopper to come FedEx.

If your job is being moved overseas, maybe it's time for you to find another job that can't be done by someone in a third world nation.

True not every job can move, but as it has gone, if they could move the jobs over seas to pay some person 2 dollars a day then it happened. Someone equated it to me once as telling your kids not to do drugs at your house, but saying it is ok to do drugs at the neighbors.

PeaceFrog
02-22-2009, 12:35 PM
So your solution is for everyone here to work less than $2.00 an hour so we can compete?

Isn't that like telling your kids, OK, you can do drugs here since you're going to do them at your neighbors house anyway and I can't stop you?

If we're going to try to be the cheapest, we'll never move ahead. I think we're better off concentrating on the quality of the way we do business here in America, and not how cheaply we can do it.

Sure, you can go to a dollar store and buy loads of crappy merchandise for really cheap. Sometimes, though, you need a quality product so you go someplace better and pay a little more.

Dude I was agreeing with you for the most part. I think it is bad idea to move jobs overseas. We can't pay people crap wages over here, so it doesn't make it right that you can move your operation over seas and do it.

The first time I was saying people have found a way to make labor dirt cheap by moving over seas.

PeaceFrog
02-22-2009, 12:42 PM
OK... we both agree that it's bad for our economy. My solution is to increase the quality of our workforce through better health care and education. That is our advantage here in America. We have the money to do that if we want to.

A better quality workforce will attract companies to do business here.

wowzers
02-22-2009, 01:05 PM
I don't think it is so much an issue with the quality of work force. It has to do with large corps can make more by paying someone less over seas. I don't think that our workers are any less quality, it just cost more to employe them.

What are your ideas for better health care and education? I'm just curious.

PeaceFrog
02-22-2009, 01:09 PM
I think quality health care and higher education should be more accessible and affordable to all American citizens. It's pretty simple. A healthy and educated workforce will do a better job than an unhealthy and uneducated one.

Cheaper is not always better.

That's my philosophy.

Smarter health workers are definitely better than a sick box of rocks, but with states struggling to make pay roll what funds it?

That's a good question.

First, we have to get the economy back on track.

I have some radical ideas and some not so radical ideas. Honestly I don't know... whatever works.

I made a similar observation about 20 years ago. Seagulls hung out at the Burger King lot, but not McDonalds, Roy Rogers, Ginos or Wendys.

Right now i have 2 college degrees, cant find work in my field or anything approaching it, and fast food places wont take me because "as soon as something better comes along you'll leave" (100% true). So, fast food work is not just for teens, single moms in their early 20s and losers looking for extra money to buy crack, unfortunately some of us all fall that low.
