No, not just for a mouse. It creates jobs and helps the environment.

How many jobs will be created from this? How is this not purely a pet project for her district?

$30 million worth of jobs.

So 30 million will go towards paying people to fix the marsh. Doesn't leave much left over to actually accomplish the task.

yeah it will creat some jobs, not enough to help the rest of us. Worthwhile project if brought up on its own and not called stimulus. just a small part of a waste of money, for the most part.

thanks for your opinion. Too bad nobody cares about your economic ideas since they've been proven wrong already.

UPDATED:
Talk about a pet project. A tiny mouse with the longtime backing of a political giant may soon reap the benefits of the economic-stimulus package.
Lawmakers and administration officials divulged Wednesday that the $789 billion economic stimulus bill being finalized behind closed doors in Congress includes $30 million for wetlands restoration that the Obama administration intends to spend in the San Francisco Bay Area to protect, among other things, the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi represents the city of San Francisco and has previously championed preserving the mouse's habitat in the Bay Area.
The revelation immediately became a political football, as Republicans accused Democrats of reneging on a promise to keep so-called earmarks that fund lawmakers' favorite projects out of the legislation. Democrats, including Mrs. Pelosi, countered that the accusations were fabricated.

They are taking 30 million dollars and restoring wetlands, which I presume does much more than provide a suitable habitat for one endangered critter. The article makes no mention of exactly what is being done to the marsh or why it needs to be restored. Does it need to be dredged or cleaned up of pollution? From that article alone I can make no sound judgment of whether this is wasteful spending or actually doing something good for the environment. Anyways I'm sorry you guys are so pissed they might be spending money on fixing the environment rather than blowing shit up.

Why should a resident of VT, NH or MA have to pay to clean up San Francisco?
The federal gov't shouldn't have the right to hijack my wages for this shit when we have our own projects that need doing.
I don't think anyone here thinks that cleaning up our environment is a bad thing. It's a matter of responsibility but who's responsibility? Is it the guy 3,000 miles away just trying to feed his family?

I suppose I agree with you that Californians should pay to clean up their own messes, as we should clean up our own.
But when I think of all the billions or trillions we've wasted on the military industrial complex to fight other peoples' wars and make a bunch of rich men even richer, it would be a nice change for the taxes I actually do pay, to do something good, for a change.

like I said above, I think it is a worthwhile project. I agree with Blendix that it probably should be up to California to do. What I do not like is that this stimulus bill is full of these pet projects that will not do much as stimulus (they will add SOME temporary jobs and infuse SOME money into the economy) to help the overall economy.

I see that point.
I think the real problem with the stimulus bill is the tax cut.
That was a mistake. And will come back to bite Obama in the ass.

I agree. I am all for cutting taxes, who isn't, but it is a token gesture to appease the Senate repubs that will not change or stimulate anything. I would rather see the money go towards paying for all these projects.
