Hi folks. I have an issue with my 73 westy. This summer I had a 2000cc rebuilt motor put in and recently had some valve adjustments after 600 miles. I recently notice I can only go up to 10 mph the most on moderately sloped hills and 5mph on steep hills. The motor tends to "buck" as if something is clogged.

I can pickup adequate speeds on flats and down hills.

I know vdubs don't handle well on hills, but i was able to maintain a steady 40-45 mph on hills. The carb is about 4 yrs old and it has an electric fuel pump.

Any ideas where to start.. I did some googling and some articles mentioned the accelerator pump. I don't even know how to locate that pump.

Any advice would be helpful. I would hate to drive her in that condition or leave her at home for the Vibes.

Thannks.

Not a VW owner, but this sounds like the classic symptoms of needing to replace the fuel filter (on pretty much any vehicle). I'd start there - if that doesn't solve the problem, then dig deeper.

Good luck!

The fuel filter was my hunch, but if that's the case, shouldn't I have the relatively the same acceleration issue on flat roads as well?

Ok. So someone on lovemybus.com mentioned checking the
distributor and ignition timing..will do that as well as the filter change.

Will keep you posted as to the results.
