Prose vs. Poetry

I don't know but I never got into poetry, always had a preference for prose. Maybe it is a left, right brain thing. Maybe I just haven't been exposed to the right poetry. My favorite author of prose is Thoreau, but I have no idea who my favorite poet is. Please give me some ideas as to poems or poets to check out to enrich myself.
