less processed foods, this weekend I am attempting to make my own yogurt.

I already make my own breads, sweets, pita, hamburger/hotdog buns, rolls, etc.

I only buy fresh produce, no frozen or canned (with the exception of frozen corn in the winter, once the farmers market opens, I'll get that fresh, too. The fresh corn in the stores right now is AWFUL)

So anyway, wish me luck!! My kids each eat a 6oz organic yogurt every morning. So that's 2 yogurts a day, for 7 days, at $.75 each or $46! a month.

a gallon of nonhormone added milk right now is $3.19 at publix. Plus a packet of gelatin, plus some "starter" is $.75, plus fresh fruit or honey or vanilla or granola (which I already have) so roughly $5 for a gallon of homemade yogurt!

Good luck! We are trying to do the same thing! I'm a coupon lady! :funny1:

I'm going to start it when I get home from picking Mike up from work. I bought granola to sprinkle on top, and I cooked some blueberries and made a sauce for the kids to stir into theirs :D

it didn't turn out.

I'm going to have to try the whole milk route, which everyone says is easier

really?, after reading this thread yesterday, i made my first yogurt. i used skim, and it came out pretty good.
i used stoney field farms for the "starter".

i did it this way:

It didn't thicken, but upon further inpection it WAS yogurt and not just nasty warm milk. I tossed it in the blender with some local organic honey and frozen peaches, zapped it, put it in a covered pitcher and viola' I have an entire pitcher of drinkable yogurt (which my kids love) at a much lower price! (and no art. colors or HFCS!) trying again for yogurt tonight.

Stonyfield Farms

the weird thing is, Aidan asked for more smoothie. I went in the fridge to get the pitcher and pour him some, and NOW it's yogurt!

sounds like we both did well with Stonyfield Farms. I only made 16 ounces, and its gone. I'm going to do a half gallon later.
