Drumming in circles is one of those things that can go either way for me.
Many a time i've had a great circle of half a dozen or so players who are really listening to each other and vibing and BAM! up walks ultra-hipster dready white guy with the loudest drum on the planet...plays OVER everybody for 5 minutes, then gets up and leaves after he's proved his coolness by soloing non-stop.

If anyones interested...here's some tips for coming into/playing in circles (or any collaborative jamming on any instrument).

1) Sit back and establish a GROUP RHYTHM. This doesnt necessarily mean everyone playing the same beat, but thats ok too.
2)When most of the group is on the same page is when you can strike out and solo/induce new rhythms/patterns/dynamics. This is language in its most primitive & complex form, use it as such.
3)Use your instruments dynamics. Just because you have the loudest Jembe (sp?) doesnt mean you play it that way the whole time. HAVE COURTESY. THIS IS A COLLOBORATIVE CIRCLE, NOT A WANKING SESSION, RESPECT THE PEOPLE NEXT TO YOU EVEN IF THEY CAN'T PLAY AS WELL AS YOU & give them their fare share of attention in the group "discussion".

If this helps at least one person interact properly, I will be happy :boogie:

i cannot stand drum circles. countless sub par "drummers" with no sense of rhythm trying to play the "not fade away" beat for hours on end. :bang:

2006 Vibes I worked the Rock the Earth booth. We were right across from a drum vendor. 10AM til midnight of people hacking away. Surprised I didn't commit murder.

lol mad hate for drum circles in here...

let me counter by saying drum circles are my favorite thing EVER :V:

but i also 100% agree with everything Jakaro said. seriously just because you have the biggest drum doesn't mean you have the biggest cock :funny1:

I wouldn't mind drum circles if they didn't suck so badly. They usually just sound like a bunch of incoherent banging

Absolutely love drum circles no matter how horrible they sound. And some of them really do sound horrible. Its not just the sound for me. Its seeing human beings interacting and having fun, collecting and joining each other, trying to enjoy their beats, trying to entertain all of us for free.

I got my first djembe for christmas 2 years ago. Its a nice medium sized drum. Love playing that thing when I'm stressed out. I get stuck on it for a while whenever I pick it up. I thought about bringing it last year, but I'm afraid it'll get stolen. I bought a little nick-nack-patty-whack drum at the vibes last year. I'm not really sure what its good for, but it looks nice on my desk next to my vintage looking globe. Maybe I'll bring it this year and play it with my index fingers like last year. :)

that beat used to make me roll my eyes too. when i started studying latin music i found a new love for it. 3/2 clave beat been around long before not fade away was doing the backstroke in buddy holly's nads.
but yeh, i hear ya :coffee: for me it depends who's playin it.

3-6 people is an ideal circle, like hacky sackin.
anything bigger gets unruly but can be fun too, in those i notice little pockets of neighboring rhythms since you cant hear people who are far or who dont have a drum larger than the rims on their escalade.

i hold nothing against a specific beat, just people who try and bash it out for hours on end using poorly tuned hand drums and remo "djembes":bang:

and yes I know the history of this beat. made famous by bo diddley based in west african drumming(now that shit I can listen too)

Why dont you forget everything you've learned as a human, zone out and listen to the sound of hands making noise. You know how lucky we are to be able to understand and enjoy noise waves?

Why dont you forget everything you've learned as a human, zone out and listen to the sound of hands making noise. Some people just don't like that kind of noise.

You know how lucky we are to be able to understand and enjoy noise waves?
It's got nothing to do with luck.

A few years back we took the kids to California and did the whole coast. We were hanging out at venice beach. That coast gets the sunset and has mountains.....so as it gets a bit closer to sunset, all these people started collecting on the beach with their drums. It turned into a giant drum circle including a full trap set right on the sand (tastefully and respectfully played I might add). As the sun set and the drum circle played, I turned to my wife and said, "if I ever run away from home, this is where you can find me. "
