So I just turned 36 and I feel like I should be supplementing my diet w/ vitamins.

Can I get some suggestions?

In the next year I have some self issues to work on (work, weight, smoking, exercise) and I feel taking vitamins, especially now in life, should be part of the routine.

Help please, m'ladies...

Well I will be turning 36 in June, And as of my last doctord visit, she said I should be taking a Multivitamin every day, as well as Calcium and vitamin D. I just started last week- we will see....

me, personally, i have taken some vitamins in my life but i would rather supplement with herbs, spirulina, sea veggies, etc. if you're going to take vitamins, you really need to consider food based vitamins and they are quite a bit more expensive than "regular" vitamins.

oatstraw is really high in calcium as are soaked, shelled sunflower seeds. also, for osteoperosis prevention, it's important to exercise esp some kind of isometric (weight resistance) exercise like yoga or pilates. or even weight lifting.

nettles are really high in iron

i'm turning 50 (!) this year!!!!

hey there, my old fart friends :) <3 i'm eavesdropping in here!!

my .02: calcium pills actually aren't as effective as we would hope-- your body can only tolerate a certain amount of calcium-- about the same you'd get in a few glasses of milk or a few slices of cheese per day. when i went vegan (briefly) i was particularly concerned, and bought a bottle of calcium pills, but after reading up on it i learned that your body will actually shed most of the calcium in your urine. oddly enough, the more calcium in the supplement, the less your body will actually absorb. it's as if your body protects against an overdose by overcompensating when it detects too much calcium! the way i see it, the pills are a waste of money. luckily-- you can get calcium from soy milk, other soy products, many nuts and beans, and (surprisingly) leafy greens!

good luck hot mamas :)

UMMM, Jess...I never said I was OLD!

The thing about calcium is it's ineffective unless there's phosphorus, so it can be absorbed into the system.

So I started taking a multivitamin and I'll be joining a gym soon. I really need a kick in the @ss. Being an online college student my body has been getting accustomed to being stationary.

try getting your calcium from dark leafy greens, you will have a better absorbtion rate.

Kale chips are great!

too bad there aren't any gyms near us, well, any AFFORDABLE gyms nearby.

there's one at UNH (but its always jam-packed) and the other one near us is at least $50/month per person...

On the gym front, check out getting Jillian Michael's 30 day Shred :) I'm using it to tone up for the wedding :) It's INTENSE!!!

I read an article recently that talks about a particular type of vitamin D that one should take to specifically address osteoporosis (or to prevent it.) Let me see, where did I put that...

yup. SUNSHINE.
Getting your vitamin d naturally is 1091834832094183094311320984 times better than taking a supplement.

Get out in the sun. 15-20 minutes a day is enough. And shocking as this may seem spend 15 mintues outside with your skin exposed to sunshine without SPF on it. Many recent studies have recently come out indicating that people are begining to actually suffer from Vitamin D deficiency due to SPF useage!!
